Purpose of Announcement
EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL TWO (2) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF JEFFERSON PROTECTION AND ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICE AND FOR FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.
Kind of Work
Under general supervision of the Director, employee performs highly responsible managerial, supervisory, and administrative work in oversight of programs or operations for the Eastbank & Westbank JPAWS facilities. For the Program vacancy, employee directly supervises the divisions of Behavior Specialist and Transport Coordinator. Oversee the development, implementation of enrichment & training programs to improve animal health & adoptability. Together with the Behaviorist, create & innovate best practices to develop the future state of the behavioral program & initiatives. Works with & handles animals of varying species, size & temperament daily in a caring, safe, & respectful manner. Adhere to all safety, training, handling & transportation protocols in order to ensure that the departments environment is safe for animals, the public, volunteers & other employees. For the Animal Operations vacancy, employee directly supervises the divisions of Care, Front, & Humane and Medical Coordination. Performs daily oversight ensuring all animals receive proper feeding, sanitation, and humane care. Collaborates with Veterinarians and Medical Division staff to schedule and track vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, emergency medical treatments. Manages records processes related to animal intake, transfers, evaluation, euthanasia when necessary. Reads, understands, and adheres to the standard operating procedures and departmental budget provided by the Director. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Meets one of the following:
I. Possession of a Bachelor's degree or major coursework (successful completion of at least 30 credit hours) from an accredited college or university in Animal Science, Animal Health, Biology, Veterinary Technology, Zoology, or a related field; PLUS, one (1) year of supervisory experience overseeing the welfare of animals AND significant (approximately 1 year) paid work experience in an animal facility setting.
II. Possession of an Associate's degree or major coursework (successful completion of at least 15 credit hours) from an accredited college or university in Animal Science, Animal Health, Biology, Veterinary Technology, Zoology, or a related field; PLUS, one (1) year of supervisory experience overseeing the welfare of animals AND considerable (approximately 3 years) paid work experience in animal facility setting.
III. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent certificate; PLUS, one (1) year of supervisory experience overseeing the welfare of animals AND extensive (approximately 5 years) paid work experience in an animal facility setting.
Preferred: Possession of a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) credential.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. Vacation (Annual Leave)
Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.
Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is
usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.

Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked.
Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.
Holidays
Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.
Life Insurance
All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one year's salary.
Extra insurance may be purchased.
Medical Insurance
An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their
dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of
the premiums for dependents.
A Flexible Benefits Plan
Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health
insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings
Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.
Retirement
Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement
System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after
January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service
is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with
10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment
Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.
Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)
Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer
up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.
Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without
penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
Special leaves of absence for military service, maternity leave, etc.
