Catholic Extension information

What is Catholic Extension?

Catholic Extension is a national nonprofit organization that supports and strengthens under-resourced Catholic communities in the United States. Founded in 1905, it provides funding and resources to dioceses, parishes, and ministries in mission areas, especially in rural and remote regions. Their work includes building churches, supporting clergy, and funding educational and pastoral programs to help communities grow in faith and service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Catholic Extension program officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Catholic Extension Program Officer, you need a background in nonprofit management, grant administration, and a strong understanding of Catholic values and church operations, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with donor management systems, CRM platforms, and grant writing software is typically required. Excellent interpersonal communication, cultural sensitivity, and organizational skills help build relationships with dioceses and stakeholders. These skills ensure effective stewardship of resources and the successful advancement of Catholic Extension’s mission in underserved communities.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by professionals working at Catholic Extension in supporting under-resourced Catholic communities?

Professionals at Catholic Extension often encounter the challenge of serving dioceses and parishes in geographically isolated or economically disadvantaged areas. This requires adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and creative problem-solving to address limited resources and diverse community needs. Team members frequently collaborate with local clergy, volunteers, and partner organizations to implement sustainable initiatives. The work environment is mission-driven and supportive, with regular opportunities for cross-functional teamwork and personal growth in faith-based service.
