Job description

The mission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. To further the mission and deep spiritual hunger among young adults and a strong desire for authentic community, spiritual depth, mentorship and meaningful accompaniment in the life of the Church, the Archdiocese seeks a Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. This role will lead and coordinate the Church’s outreach to young adults across the archdiocese. This role will help cultivate vibrant communities of faith by supporting parish-based ministries, forming young adult leaders, and creating opportunities for encounter with Christ through prayer, formation, retreats, and community life.

The Director will work collaboratively with pastors, campus ministries, parish leaders, and young adult volunteers to foster a culture of missionary discipleship rooted in authentic relationships, reverent liturgy, and the sacramental life of the Church.

Duties and Responsibilities

Archdiocesan Leadership

  • Work to develop and implement a strategic vision for young adult ministry across the archdiocese based on the findings and recommendations of the Cardinal’s task force on youth and young adult ministry
  • Serve as the primary resource and liaison for parish and regional young adult ministry leaders.
  • Coordinate communication and collaboration between parishes, campus ministries, and Catholic organizations serving young adults.
  • Supervise and mentor staff within the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, including:
    • Two Youth Ministry Coordinators responsible for supporting parish youth ministers and developing youth programming.
    • An Administrative Assistant responsible for communications, event logistics, and office operations.

Formation and Support of Leaders

  • Provide training, mentoring, and formation for parish young adult ministry leaders (both staff and volunteers).
  • Assist parishes in launching and sustaining young adult communities and small groups.
  • Facilitate leadership development programs for young adult missionaries and volunteers.

Programming and Evangelization

  • Organize archdiocesan-wide young adult events, such as conferences, retreats, Theology on Tap–style gatherings, and pilgrimages.
  • Partner with parishes to launch evangelization initiatives such as Alpha programs and discipleship small groups.
  • Develop retreat experiences that connect participants with local parish communities and small groups.
  • Lead the planning and execution of the Annual Mass for Life.

Outreach and Inclusion

  • Encourage young adult engagement across diverse communities, including Hispanic, African American, and international Catholic communities.
  • Collaborate with campus ministry, evangelization offices, and parish leadership to reach young adults who are not actively involved in parish life.

Communications

  • In collaboration with the Archdiocese Communication office, develop effective communications and digital outreach (including social media) to connect young adults with ministries and events across the archdiocese.

Required Education and Experience

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with a passion for the Church’s mission of evangelization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology or related field.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in Young Adult or Campus Ministry.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience in managing and leading a team.
  • Excellent writing skills.

The salary range for this role is $118,000 to $124,000 with excellent benefits
