What is a Catalyst Church?

A Catalyst Church is typically a Christian church focused on igniting spiritual growth and transformation within its community. These churches often emphasize outreach, innovation, and creating environments where people can encounter God in fresh and impactful ways. The term 'Catalyst' reflects their mission to spark change—helping individuals and communities grow in faith, service, and purpose. Many Catalyst Churches offer contemporary worship, small groups, and programs designed to meet the needs of various age groups. Their approach often centers on being accessible, welcoming, and relevant to modern life.

What are the main challenges faced when working on a church staff team at Catalyst Church, and how can new team members prepare for them?

New team members can prepare by familiarizing themselves with church operations, being proactive in offering support to colleagues, and being open to feedback and learning opportunities. Description

Part Time - 10 Hours/Week

As the Choir Section Lead on the Mercy Hill Worship team, you will help shape both the sound and presence of our choir-a team that exists to make the room feel different the moment they step on stage. The choir is both a musical and visual experience, bringing a fullness and weight that a band alone cannot, while a stage full of engaged, expressive people communicates something before a single note is sung. You'll provide resourcing and leadership, investing in team members so they feel inspired, equipped, and cared for, and helping open the door for more people to use their musical gifts and find a place to belong, serve, and contribute. Your role is vital in cultivating excellence that reflects our Five Pillars-spiritual, relational, musical, visual, and missional-ensuring the choir not only sings with skill, but leads with heart, presence, and purpose.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesĀ

Every choir appearance follows a clear, consistent process from scheduling to service day, and the Choir Section Lead owns this process end to end.

1. Scheduling & Coordination

a. Schedule choir members for services. The choir performs 4-6 times per year, including Christmas and Easter; specific dates and songs are selected by the Worship Pastor and communicated to the Choir Section Lead.

b. Once a choir date is confirmed, schedule a minimum of two rehearsals prior to the service, in addition to any dress rehearsals, setting rehearsal times with enough lead time for choir members to plan accordingly.

c. Communicate regularly with the choir about upcoming rehearsals, services, and expectations.

2. Practice Resources

a. Distribute all song resources in advance of the first rehearsal. Resources include an MP3 for each song and full lyric sheets.

b. Ensure accurate practice resources are provided for each service choir is involved in.

c. Partner with the Worship Associate Director - MD when needed to create or adapt resources.

3. Auditions & Development

a. Organize and lead two choir auditions per year.

b. Provide ongoing feedback to choir members, offering both encouragement and constructive guidance.

c. Support the growth of choir members by identifying strengths and areas for improvement, developing both vocal skill and the presence, posture, and energy that make the choir a visual catalyst on stage.

4. Projects & Collaboration

a. Assist in recording the choir for Mercy Hill Worship original music projects.

b. Collaborate with worship staff to maintain high standards of musical and visual excellence.

5. Logistics: Meals, Snacks & Attire

a. For each rehearsal and service, coordinate food and snacks for the choir.

b. Communicate and coordinate attire expectations ahead of each event.

6. Miscellaneous Responsibilities
