Who We Are Seeking

John Moran Auctioneers & Appraisers is seeking a Jewelry Cataloguer responsible for researching and describing jewelry and watches in both technical and aesthetic terms for auction, private sale, appraisals, and buy‑now platforms. In this role, the cataloguer identifies, labels, weighs, measures, tests, and stores inventory received from consignments, performs accurate data entry for all jewelry property, and turns in proofed cataloguing text by assigned deadlines. As part of a collaborative, team‑oriented department, the cataloguer also assists with administrative functions such as receipting, tagging, shipping, sale setup, previews & auctions, and works closely with the senior specialist and photographer throughout the cataloguing process. Training and ongoing guidance are provided by the Senior Specialist and Director in areas including evaluation, hallmark and maker’s mark identification, and the broader study of jewelry and watches.

The Cataloguer will:

  • Work with specialists to ensure formulaic property entry to minimize required cataloging changes
  • Research as needed
  • Receive and enter property into database
  • Coordinate and track, testing and repairs
  • Ensure any and all relevant literature references, provenance information or other supporting documentation is entered and well-organized
  • Edit and proof catalog text
  • Assist with catalog layout, ordering the sale
  • Preparation of condition reports
  • Assist clients with images, as well as further information as requested
  • Assist photographers in styling shoots
  • Assist with processing photo appraisals, as needed


Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in gemstone identification and diamond grading using tools such as diamond testers, refractometers, and microscopes
  • Ability to assess the weight of mounted and loose gemstones and determine the type and purity of precious metals using an XRF analyzer
  • Possession of, or active progress toward, a Graduate Gemologist (GIA) degree
  • Demonstrated interest in expanding knowledge of jewelry and watch history, designers, and design houses within the modern marketplace
  • Excellent writing, research, and documentation skills
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑resolution skills; detail‑oriented and highly accurate
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, with the ability to adapt to new systems as required
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple deadlines, and perform effectively under pressure while proactively identifying and addressing workflow, timeline, or operational issues
  • Desire to work cross‑departmentally in a team‑oriented environment
