What are some common challenges faced by CASEL program coordinators when implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives in schools?

CASEL program coordinators often encounter challenges such as securing buy-in from all stakeholders, integrating SEL into existing curricula, and ensuring consistent implementation across classrooms. They may also face limited resources and time constraints, which can impact training and ongoing support for teachers. Collaborating closely with educators, administrators, and families is essential for overcoming these obstacles and creating a sustained, positive impact on students' social-emotional development.

What is a casel?

CASEL stands for the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. It is a leading organization dedicated to advancing the practice of social and emotional learning (SEL) in education. CASEL develops frameworks, offers resources, and supports educators, policymakers, and communities in implementing effective SEL initiatives. Their work helps schools foster environments where students can develop essential life skills such as self-awareness, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CASEL professional, you need expertise in social and emotional learning (SEL), education or psychology, and often a relevant degree such as in education, counseling, or social work. Familiarity with SEL frameworks, data analysis tools, and curriculum development platforms is typically required. Strong soft skills like collaboration, communication, and cultural competency help build relationships with educators, students, and stakeholders. These skills are vital for effectively implementing SEL programs and fostering positive learning environments that support student well-being and academic success.

Job description

HIGH SCHOOL SEL/CTE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

PROJECT OVERVIEW

We are a small company launching an innovative, AI-driven, online high school student success program focusing on “Purpose”. (See more at DreamRoads.com). We have a preliminary Scope & Sequence.

We need a High School ID specialist to create a highly engaging, structured online curriculum that aligns with high school students’ development, meets Perkins V career exploration funding criteria, as well as state/national standards for SEL.

FIRST PROJECT

There will be other members of the team: A MS Instructional Designer, an Adult ID, a Media Producer, and an AI Engineer. The first task will be to work with these team members to lay out a Project Plan. Identify the number of Phases required over time (to create a “Chevrolet” MVP by November 30, 2026 and move over time to a full-scale “Rolls Royce”).

What will be the Phases to go through (how many)? What will be done (and by whom) in the first Phase, deliverables, timing, cost. Then the second Phase, then following Phases.

Hopefully, after approval of the Project Plan by the Founder, the person hired for this role will continue, and produce the high school materials as described in the Plan. However, the DreamRoads Founder has the right to choose someone else to proceed with the Execution if she feels that is necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Development of Project Plan as described above (August 1 – September 1)

9th Grade “Chevrolet” Curriculum (September 1 – October 15)

  • Develop final detailed Scope & Sequence for the high school program
  • Specify how AI should adjust language, complexity, examples, and depth for each high school grade
  • Write 9th grade lessons
  • Include worksheets, reflection prompts, interactive exercises, and activities. A combination of individual, small group, and classroom activities.
  • Work with the Media Producer to add age-appropriate videos, graphics, badges, and interactive content.
  • Add Parent materials (Questions for parents to discuss with their child for each unit; ways for parents to provide their observations of their child regarding the topic of each unit, etc.)
  • Work with AI Engineers to identify areas where AI will be used to personalize each lesson to each user (based on their individual dreams, interests, strengths, values, etc.)
  • Accommodate different learning styles; different cultural, demographic, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Include elements that are required to qualify for Perkins V Grant Funding
  • Meet all national academic standards, and Arizona-specific standards, privacy and safety requirements for minor children. (FERPA, CASEL, etc.)

10th-12th Grade “Chevrolet” Curricula (October 15-November 30)

  • Do the same as above for 10th-12th grade curriculum
  • Identify lessons to be included in a “Jumpstart” program (for students joining the program mid-stream), modify them and add new ones for this circumstance if necessary

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep passion for the program being developed
  • 3+ years of significant high-school SEL instructional design experience, preferably of online courses
  • Deep understanding of teen cognitive development, focus limits, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Familiarity with incorporating AI curricula
  • Familiarity with high school CTE programs
  • Excellent written communication skills (without using AI)
  • Ability to work independently, work with a team, and meet tight timelines

TIMING

Development of initial Project Plan with other team members to be completed by September 1.

Phase 1 described above to be completed by October 15

PAYMENT

Payment for Initial Project Plan and completion of each Phase will be a flat fee. No hourly billing. Payment will be made as each Phase is completed.

NEXT STEPS
