Job description

Claims Adjuster I/II (Mid-Level) โ€” Auto Liability

Department: Claims Reports To: Claims Manager FLSA Status: Exempt Location: McDonough, Georgia

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Claims Adjuster to manage a caseload of auto liability claims from first notice of loss through resolution. The ideal candidate brings 3โ€“5 years of liability claims-handling experience and demonstrates strong investigative, negotiation, and file-documentation skills. Cargo claims experience is strongly preferred and will be given priority consideration, as this role may support a book of business involving motor carrier and cargo liability exposures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate, evaluate, and resolve auto liability claims of moderate to high complexity, ensuring compliance with state regulations and company best practices.
  • Conduct timely and thorough investigations, including scene inspections, witness interviews, and coordination with independent adjusters, engineers, and other experts as needed.
  • Analyze liability and damages; issue reserve recommendations in accordance with authority level.
  • Negotiate settlements directly with claimants, attorneys, and third parties within assigned settlement authority.
  • Evaluate and process cargo liability claims, including analysis of bills of lading, cargo insurance policies, Carmack Amendment exposure, and interline/broker liability issues (where applicable).
  • Maintain accurate, well-documented claim files, including timely diary management, status updates, and reserve adjustments.
  • Identify subrogation, salvage, and fraud indicators, and refer files appropriately.
  • Communicate claim status and resolution strategy clearly to policyholders, brokers, and internal stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • 3โ€“5 years of liability claims adjusting experience, primarily auto liability (commercial auto experience a plus).
  • Active adjuster license(s) as required by state(s) of operation, or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe.
  • Strong working knowledge of liability investigation techniques, coverage analysis, and negotiation strategy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong file documentation habits.
  • Proficiency with claims management systems (e.g., Guidewire, Duck Creek, or similar) and standard MS Office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a diverse caseload under time-sensitive deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior cargo claims experience, including familiarity with:
    • Carmack Amendment liability and federal motor carrier regulations
    • Bills of lading, cargo insurance policies, and broker/carrier liability distinctions
    • Freight loss and damage claim handling, subrogation, and recovery processes
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Industry designations such as AIC, SCLA, or similar (preferred, not required).

Experience working with transportation, logistics, or trucking-focused insureds.
