What careers are in cardiology?

Careers in cardiology include roles such as cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, electrophysiologists, and cardiovascular technologists. These professionals diagnose and treat heart conditions, often requiring specialized training, certifications, and use of diagnostic tools like echocardiograms and stress tests.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cardiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cardiologist, you need an in-depth understanding of cardiovascular medicine, advanced diagnostic skills, and completion of a medical degree with cardiology specialization and board certification. Familiarity with echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, EKG interpretation, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities help build patient trust and enable effective teamwork. These competencies are crucial for delivering accurate diagnoses, effective treatment plans, and high-quality patient care in a complex medical field.

What are some common challenges cardiologists face when managing complex patient cases?

Cardiologists often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple comorbidities, staying current with rapidly evolving treatment guidelines, and handling high-pressure situations in acute care settings. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including nurses, surgeons, and primary care physicians—is essential to ensure comprehensive care. Additionally, cardiologists must navigate the emotional aspects of delivering difficult news to patients and their families while maintaining a high standard of empathy and professionalism.

What does a cardiologist do?

A cardiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases and conditions related to the heart and blood vessels. They perform tests such as echocardiograms, stress tests, and electrocardiograms to assess heart health. Cardiologists manage conditions like heart attacks, arrhythmias, heart failure, and hypertension, and often work with patients to reduce risk factors for heart disease. They may also coordinate care with other specialists for comprehensive treatment.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

In the healthcare field, some roles such as medical assistants or phlebotomists can earn around $3,000 monthly with on-the-job training or certification rather than a degree. Other options include sales, real estate, or certain skilled trades like HVAC or plumbing, which often require vocational training or apprenticeships instead of a college degree.

Job description

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics, is seeking an outstanding individual for a faculty position in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at UT Southwestern and Children's Health Dallas in the section of Electrophysiology.
Candidates should have three years of General Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship, as well as specialty training in Pediatric Electrophysiology. Candidates should have experience in invasive and non-invasive EP, as well as a strong commitment to patient care, teaching and clinical research. Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the state of Texas and must be board certified in Pediatrics, as well as board eligible or certified in Pediatric Cardiology.
The missions of the UT Southwestern Pediatric Cardiology Division are to deliver excellent, high quality/high value care to children today, to advance the field of pediatric cardiology through research and innovation, and to educate future physicians and researchers in the care of children with cardiac and cardiovascular disorders. The Division is among the largest in the nation with more than 40 faculty members who drive forward well-developed clinical and scholarly programs in interventional catheterization and electrophysiology; fetal cardiology, and management of congenital heart disease from infancy to adulthood; heart failure, cardiac transplantation, and cardiovascular disease prevention; critical care medicine; cardiac imaging by echo, CT, and MR; and application of AI tools in numerous aspects of patient care. Expertise in the Division is complemented by multidisciplinary experts from UT Southwestern Pediatric Group physicians in Critical Care Medicine, Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesia, Diagnostic Radiology, and Cardiovascular Genetics.
The primary site of clinical care is Children's Health Dallas, one of the nation's largest children's hospitals; there is a busy echo lab and 3 catheterization laboratories. One of the catheterization laboratories is equipped with state-of-the-art EP mapping, including 3D mapping with overlay for ablations. More than 150 ablations are performed each year including SVT, VT and atrial flutter. Transvenous pacemakers, implantable loop recorder and ICD implants are also performed as well as 14,000 EKGs, >800 Holters and >600 pacemaker evaluations/year. With a 22-bed telemetry unit, a 32-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, a 1.5T cardiac MRI facility, and approximately 24,000 clinic visits/year, the Pediatric Cardiology faculty have resources sufficient to meet present and future needs of children across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, with a population of more than 7,000,000 and growing. In addition, there is a catheterization laboratory at our Children's Health Plano hospital with telemetry capabilities for 74 beds, a 12 bed ICU and a robust ambulatory cardiology program with outpatient and inpatient echocardiograms performed.
The Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern has a long and rich history that is interwoven with the roots of Southwestern Medical School and with the development and growth of Children's Health, our primary clinical partner. The Department is structured into 17 academic divisions, consisting of more than 400 faculty members, and several clinical multidisciplinary programs that represent the full disciplinary of pediatric medicine today. The major practice sites include Children's Health Dallas and Children's Health Plano, members of the Children's Health system and our primary pediatric clinical partners; Parkland Health & Hospital System; Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children; and our most recent partner, Texas Health Resources.
UT Southwestern, one of the premier academic medical centers in the nation, is located just a short drive from downtown Dallas, TX. The campus integrates pioneering biomedical research with exceptional clinical care and education. The institution's faculty includes many distinguished members, including six who have been awarded Nobel Prizes since 1985. The faculty of more than 2,700 is responsible for groundbreaking medical advances and is committed to translating science-driven research quickly to new clinical treatments. UT Southwestern physicians provide medical care in about 80 specialties to more than 105,000 hospitalized patients, nearly 370,000 emergency room cases, and oversee approximately 3 million outpatient visits a year. Many are cared for in the three major hospitals on campus: Clements University Hospital, Parkland Medical Center, and Children's Medical Center Dallas.
Potential candidates should apply online at https://jobs.utsouthwestern.edu/ (search for Job #760090) and upload a curriculum vitae and letter of interest.
Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience. Consideration may be given to applicants seeking less than a full-time schedule.
This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
