Seeking Substitute Bus Aides for the School City of Hobart. Positions are filled on an as-needed basis.
Position Summary
To assist the Bus Driver in transporting students to and from school and related activities in a prompt and safe manner, by serving as an on-call substitute to cover assigned routes and trips as needed.
Key Responsibilities
  • Work as a team with the Bus Driver to support safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and related activities.
  • Assist students, parents, and school personnel with safe loading and unloading at designated locations, including monitoring the loading zone and student movement.
  • Attend to students on the bus, including assisting with seatbelts, safety restraints, car seats, vests, harnesses, wheelchair lift procedures, and mobility-device securements as needed.
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain order in accordance with district expectations; report incidents or concerns promptly and complete required documentation.
  • Assist with daily bus readiness, including interior checks, child-check procedures, sweeping, cleaning spills or messes, and emptying trash.
  • Support bus safety drills, evacuation drills, and emergency response procedures as trained.
  • Maintain respectful communication and confidentiality while working with students, parents, staff, and administrators.

Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the essential functions of the position.
Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and complete required documentation accurately.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus and assist with student safety equipment and mobility needs.
  • Ability to maintain composure and respond appropriately in emergencies.

Preferred:
  • Prior experience working with children.
  • Prior experience supporting student transportation, student supervision, or special needs/mobility assistance.

Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, crouch, climb steps, maintain balance while riding in and moving within a school bus, and move quickly in the bus aisle during student loading, unloading, and emergency situations. The employee regularly assists students with safety restraints, seating, and mobility, including helping support, stabilize, or reposition students as needed using proper body mechanics and available equipment. Typical lifting and carrying requirements are up to 25 pounds constantly, up to 50 pounds occasionally to frequently, and up to 75 pounds as a team lift, as required for student safety and transport.
Work Environment
Work is performed in and around a school bus and at student loading and unloading locations. The position involves exposure to traffic, moving vehicles, noise, vibration, fumes or exhaust, uneven surfaces, and varying weather and temperature conditions. The employee must maintain constant awareness of student, pedestrian, and vehicular safety hazards while interacting with students, staff and the public, and may include working early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and occasional trips/special routes as assigned.
