Job description

Product Engineer

Summary:

The Product Engineer shall support the Account Manager in all new and existing key customer projects and initiatives – reduced time to market and profitable sales growth is the key. The Product Engineer identifies new opportunities and applications at existing key accounts through close contact with customer engineering and manufacturing departments. The Product Engineer will be responsible for part number assignment, BOM development, product design drawings and customer quotations, supported by internal costing process. The Product Engineer coordinates all product launch activities at the customer including supporting customer pilot builds and trials.

The Product Engineer will work with the Product Design Engineer, on all product lines, to maximize technical solutions for the customer.   The Product Engineer will be self-starting, motivated to learn and achieve. 

The Product Engineer will work with the Product Development team to propose improvements to current products and launch new solutions.

Preferred Educational Experience:

·         B.S.M.E., B.S.E.E., B.S.E.T. (Engineering Technology) or equivalent industry related experience.

Preferred Work Experience:

·         2-5 years’ experience in a commercial equipment / vehicle environment.

Essential Functions:

·         Ability to perform all safety critical functions.  The product must be built to the designated specs approved and cannot be deviated or substituted. The control, performance and tolerance are essential for the part to function so that it does not jeopardize public safety or it’s compliance with government regulations.

·         Must be able to recognize and call the critical characteristic symbols as listed on the blueprints.

·         Design, develop, quote and release into production assigned On-Highway, Off-Highway, and Distribution Market Segment projects.

·         Create and release preproduction CAD models and drawings.

·         Provide support and information to Sales, Purchasing, Production, Quality, Drafting and Customer Service on the products you design, quote and release into production.

·         Provide Product Field Support, Design Engineering, Product Engineering and Program Management support to our external customers.

·         General Product Engineering work including, but not limited to:

o   Team Leader and Project Manager (writing and update of project management schedules)

o   Manages Part Number Assignment.

o   Submits product costing request to Product Cost Analyst.

o   CFT meetings and Customer meetings.

o   Coordination of production release activities with Product Release Engineering

o   Engineering changes

o   Review of customer drawings and specifications, ensuring company compliance with those specifications and preparing discrepancy reports.

·         General Design Engineering work including but not limited to:

-Write and present the following engineering analysis reports to customers:

o     Load/Stress analysis

o     System Safety Analysis (MTBF, Maintainability, FMECA)

o     FMECA (Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), DRBFM (Deign Review Based on Failure Mode)

o     DVP&R (Design Verification Plan and Report)

o     QPP, QTP, QTR (Qualification Program Plan, Qualification Test Procedure, Qualification Test Report)

o     Weight Analysis

·         Performs basic testing and supports customer trials, including on-site prototype & pilot builds.

·         PDR and CDR presentation to customers (Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review)

·         Problem solving and failure analysis reports.

·         Attend trade shows and participates in industry events.

Qualifications and Desired Skills

·         The ability to work in an environment that is dynamic and demanding, applying a broad product range to a diverse customer base.  This requires a positive mindset and solution based thinking focused on results whilst delivering superior customer service and value.

·         The work intake will constantly change. Flexibility in thinking is therefore essential to optimize the use of the skills and abilities to achieve maximum results.

·         The Engineer must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be capable of interactions at all levels within Orscheln and of particular importance - externally at our customers from initial concept to production release.

·         The communication of problems and constraints in achieving objectives to functions at all levels is important.

·         Confidence and resilience are attributes that are essential to succeed when working with often difficult and demanding customers when the going gets tough.
