As a Team Manager, People, you will serve as a strategic HR advisor to Canopy's executive leadership team, while also owning the tactical execution needed to run a lean, high-performing HR function. You will operate as a trusted advisor on people strategy and organizational health, and translating business priorities into HR programs. Your scope spans global operations (US, UK, Canada), requiring fluency in multi-jurisdictional employment law and the the ability to flex seamlessly between big-picture strategy and hands-on execution.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team on organizational design, workforce planning, and people strategy, translating business objectives into scalable HR initiatives that position Canopy as an employer of choice.
  • Shape and drive the broader HR roadmap (performance management, career development, succession planning, and organizational effectiveness) ensuring programs scale with business growth and reflect leadership priorities.
  • Own the HRIS and reporting infrastructure, delivering workforce analytics and insights that inform executive decision-making on headcount, retention, and organizational planning.
  • Partner with an external recruiting firm to ensure a seamless, high-touch candidate experience from offer extension through onboarding, while overseeing performance management, development, and offboarding processes.
Stay current on employment law developments across US, UK, and Canada, proactively flagging compliance risks and collaborating with outside counsel to interpret regulations, resolve complex issues, and guide policy design across all jurisdictions.
  • Partner with brokers on health benefits plan design and open enrollment, while owning the broader total rewards portfolio, ensuring offerings remain competitive and compliant across all regions where Canopy operates.
  • Provide expert counsel to leadership on complex employee relations matters, lead investigations, and develop solutions that balance business needs with legal and cultural considerations.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Accounting on payroll accuracy and employment-related processes, while partnering with senior leaders across the business as a trusted HR advisor to ensure alignment on organizational priorities and workforce needs.
  • Lead and mentor a small team that champions employee engagement, onboarding experience, and culture-building initiatives across a distributed workforce.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive HR experience, including experience operating in a strategic HRBP or generalist capacity supporting senior/executive leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or advising on international employment matters, particularly UK and Canada employment law.
  • Experience managing direct reports and building high-performing teams.
  • Experience partnering with external recruiting/staffing agencies to manage full-cycle hiring processes.
  • Executive presence with the ability to advise and influence at the leadership/C-suite level.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to translate strategic priorities into actionable HR initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport quickly across all levels of the organization.
  • Equally tactical and strategic, comfortable rolling up sleeves while advising executives on long-term people strategy.
  • Previous experience working in an HCM system.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of US, UK, and Canada employment law.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • SHRM-CP/SCP, SPHR or similar HR certification.
  • Reside within the Detroit, Michigan area or nearby, with the ability to work in a hybrid environment and regularly commute to our Detroit office as needed.

Benefits

  • Health care and dependent care spending accounts.
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Employee discount programs.
  • Retirement plan with a generous company match.
  • Generous Paid Time Off, Sick, and Holidays
  • Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
  • Short- and long-term disability
  • Life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment insurance
