  • Trying to build a portfolio for a career in public health, epidemiology, non-profit evaluation, population health, data analytics, etc.?
  • Taken courses but still don't feel quite job-ready?
  • Want to work with real data the same data used by epidemiologists and data analysts throughout the United States?

Seeking Data Enthusiasts, All Skill Levels Welcome

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in learning data for the public good. A love and appreciation of data is required. This program is designed as an educational experience and may be eligible for academic credit. Bridge the gap between class and career.

Logistics
  • All volunteer-team. Amazing and impassioned volunteers run this program.
      • $130 Application fee. Volunteers cover their own overhead expenses.
      • Self-sustaining. Created by MPH students during the pandemic, the fee helps the training program to be self-sustaining.
  • Location. 100% remote (i.e. virtual)
  • Time Budget. The estimated time commitment is 5 to 10 hours per week
      • Spring Cohort
        • 📆 Feb 2 - May 15 (15 weeks)
        • ⏰ Total hours = 75 to 150 hours
      • Summer Cohort
        • 📆 June 1 - Aug 14 (10 weeks )
        • ⏰ Total hours = 50 to 100 hours
      • Fall Cohort
        • 📆 Sept 14 - Dec 11 (12 weeks )
        • ⏰ Total hours = 60 - 120 hours
    • Can I stay longer? We love that question. Team members who complete the program will have the option to extend the time of their time at BroadStreet.

⭐️ What Will I Learn?

  • Learning Objectives. By the end of the training program, participants will gain career-critical skills while solving real-world health challenges using a data-guided approach.
    • Specifically:
      • Objective 1. Explore public health data
      • Objective 2. Create data visualizations for your work portfolio.
      • Objective 3. Build professional experiences in a remote/virtual work environment
      • Objective 4. Collaborate with teammates and expanded professional networks.
      • Objective 5. Learn how to troubleshoot challenges, overcome roadblocks, and achieve goals.
🧰🛠️ What Data Tools Will Be Used?
  • Community Data Program: Spreadsheet skills are the foundation. While this doesn't seem fancy, spreadsheets like Excel are still the most commonly used data tools on jobsites. Then we add on Data Visualizations, Mapping, Data storytelling
  • Optional, additional "Add-Ons" are offered so you can customize your career path: Analytics team (self-guided RStudio, python), social media team (Canva, Meta Business Suite), data viz team (tableau), community data challenges (R, Airtable, Excel)

📚 Can I get course credit? (incl. MPH Practicum, Applied Practice Experience [APE, APEx], internship, volunteer hours etc.)

  • Yes. Over 500 volunteers have gotten university credit at BroadStreet since 2020.
  • What to know.
    • 10-Day Orientation. We wait until day 10 of the program to start processing paperwork. To be eligible, volunteers must meet all of the milestones of the first 10 days.
    • 10 hours a week max at BroadStreet. Volunteers who need more hours have successfully negotiated with their school to:
      • Extend timelines
      • Reduce total hours and/or
      • Get hours from another source (dayjob, research, 2nd site/experience)
Steps to Join

All skill-levels are welcome to join. We have 3 cohorts a year that begin immediately after the Orientation Webinar.

  • STEP 1. Go to our Website https://www.broadstreet.org/ > Learn & Volunteer > Internship
  • STEP 2. Reserve a spot in the Orientation Webinar on the day when you wish to start.
  • STEP 3. Pay the non-refundable $130 application fee which covers: (1) overhead expenses and (2) a donation to The Community Health Index Fund
Unique Onboarding
  • No application, no interviews.
  • Merit-based entry. "Orientation" is a 10-day onboarding process. All applicants are welcome to start Orientation. Applicants who meets the milestones of the first 10 days are invited to become an official team member at BroadStreet. Most applicants make it. The most common reason for not joining is lack of time. After Orientation, there are additional monthly milestones.
Path to Hiring

The BroadStreet Community Data Training Program is a great place to gain experience for future jobs. This program is run by our amazing volunteers. Since everyone is a volunteer, this program should not be considered a path to paid employment at BroadStreet. See our website for more FAQs.

Will I Get A Certificate?

Yes! Actually there are lots of certificate opportunities at BroadStreet for volunteers who do additional learning modules called "Add-Ons".

Can I get a letter of recommendation?

The strongest letters are written for the volunteers who decide to stay as leaders. We offer basic letters to all volunteers who successfully complete the program.

Can I join if I'm not in the U.S.?

Yes. Please note that we do not sponsor Visas or OPT.

Can I join if I do not know data?

Please do! This program is designed to be customizable to your career path. Team members who are newer to data really like learning it at BroadStreet.
