Camp Staff is a broad term encompassing various roles within a camp, including activity leaders and support personnel. Camp Counselors specifically supervise and engage with campers, often requiring similar certifications. While both roles are essential to camp operations, Camp Staff may include non-counselor positions, whereas Camp Counselors focus on camper supervision and activities.

What are camp staff?

Camp staff are individuals employed to support, supervise, and facilitate activities at summer camps, day camps, or similar recreational programs. Their roles can include counselors, activity leaders, lifeguards, kitchen staff, and administrative personnel. Camp staff are responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of campers by organizing activities, providing guidance, and fostering a positive camp environment. They often work seasonally and are trained in leadership, first aid, and youth development.

What are some common challenges camp staff face during a typical camp session?

Camp staff often encounter challenges such as managing diverse camper personalities, responding to unexpected situations like homesickness or minor injuries, and maintaining high energy throughout long days. Balancing the needs of campers while ensuring safety and fostering a fun environment can be demanding. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a positive camp experience for everyone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as Camp Staff, and why are they important?

To thrive as Camp Staff, you need strong leadership, first aid knowledge, and experience working with children, often supported by CPR certification or youth program training. Familiarity with camp management software, safety protocols, and activity planning tools is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, adaptability, and teamwork help create a positive and supportive environment for campers. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure camper safety, engagement, and the smooth operation of camp activities.

Do you make money as a camp counselor?

Camp counselors typically earn an hourly wage or stipend, which varies depending on the camp, location, and experience. Most entry-level positions pay minimum wage or slightly above, and some camps offer additional benefits or stipends for longer sessions. Compensation is generally considered part-time and seasonal, with some opportunities for raises or bonuses based on performance or responsibilities.

What are the duties of camp staff?

Camp staff are responsible for supervising and ensuring the safety of campers, leading activities, maintaining the camp environment, and assisting with daily operations. They often need good communication skills, first aid certification, and the ability to work in outdoor settings. Their duties vary depending on the specific role and camp program.

What are the staff at camps called?

Staff at camps are commonly called camp counselors, camp staff, or camp workers. These roles include positions such as counselors, activity specialists, and support staff, and often require background checks and certifications like CPR. They are responsible for supervising campers, leading activities, and ensuring safety during the camp session.

Is 25 too old to be a camp counselor?

Camp staff positions, including counselors, often welcome applicants of various ages, and 25 is generally considered a suitable age for this role. Many camps value maturity, leadership skills, and experience, which can be an asset regardless of age. Age requirements vary by camp, but being 25 typically does not disqualify someone from working as a camp counselor.

SUMMER 2026 CAMP JOBS: MALE SKATEBOARDING INSTRUCTOR + FEMALE CAMP DRIVER
Long Lake Camp Adventures – Adirondack Mountains, New York

Want to spend your summer in the mountains, live at an overnight adventure camp, work with kids, and be part of an insanely fun staff community?

Long Lake Camp Adventures is hiring for two final Summer 2026 positions:

• Male Skateboarding Instructor / Cabin Counselor
• Female Camp Driver / Support Staff

We are an overnight adventure camp for campers ages 7–16 located in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. Campers build their own daily schedules and choose from activities like skateboarding, high ropes, climbing, paintball, automotive, woodworking, waterfront, hiking, parkour, blacksmithing, robotics, campfires, trips, and much more.

No two days are the same at Long Lake.

POSITION 1: MALE SKATEBOARDING INSTRUCTOR / CABIN COUNSELOR

We are looking for a male skateboarding instructor who is excited to teach kids, live in a camper bunk, and be part of the full camp experience.

This is not just a skateboarding job. You will spend part of your day teaching skateboarding and helping campers build skills, confidence, balance, control, and style. The rest of your day will be spent living and working with campers alongside your co-counselors.

Responsibilities include:
• Teaching beginner and intermediate skateboarding
• Helping campers progress safely and confidently
• Supervising the skate area
• Encouraging kids of all skill levels
• Living in a bunk with campers
• Helping with meals, evening activities, trips, and daily camp life
• Being flexible and jumping into other adventure activities when needed

This is a great fit for someone who loves skating, enjoys working with kids, has energy, and wants a summer that is active, social, challenging, and unforgettable.

POSITION 2: FEMALE CAMP DRIVER / SUPPORT STAFF

We are also looking for a female camp driver who does not live in a camper bunk.

This role is perfect for someone responsible, flexible, calm under pressure, and comfortable driving normal vehicles including cars, SUVs, and minivans.

Responsibilities may include:
• Driving campers to doctor appointments
• Supply runs
• Airport or travel support when needed
• Helping with camp trips
• Driving to hikes, outings, and local activities
• Supporting the office, leadership team, and general camp operations
• Joining camp trips and hikes when you want to
• Helping wherever needed around camp

This position is still very much part of camp life, but without the responsibility of living in a camper cabin.

WHAT BOTH POSITIONS INCLUDE

• Free housing
• 3 meals a day
• Summer salary
• 1 day off per week
• Access to tons of camp activities
• Waterfront, hiking, ropes, climbing, campfires, staff events, and more
• A fun, international staff community
• A summer in the Adirondack Mountains
• The chance to make a real impact on kids’ lives

THE REALITY OF CAMP

Camp is not a vacation. The days are long, the work is demanding, and kids can be challenging.

But if you bring energy, patience, flexibility, and a good attitude, it can easily become one of the most meaningful and unforgettable summers of your life.
