Job description

Summary of Purpose:

The Mechanical Senior Project Manager role plans, directs, manages and provides oversight of assigned construction projects to ensure that both Cajun and client goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed schedule and budget parameters. The Senior Project Manager must effectively communicate with field staff, technical staff, sub-contractors and management from both Cajun and the owner. The Mechanical Senior Project Manager will need to provide both internal and external coordination and collaboration with all members of the project team. The Senior Project Manager must champion the management of key Cajun initiatives ensuring that the safety, quality, and productivity standards are met. The position requires considerable judgment and latitude in performing job duties, and is expected to function effectively with minimal to moderate direct supervision.

Essential Functions:

  1. On the front end, the Senior Project Manager must be able to provide detailed constructability reviews of project documents and make recommendations.
  2. The Senior Project Manager responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, post award of a contract and will include taking a lead role in preparation of an estimate for a project. This will include oversight of preparing a bid, leading the effort for a bid and aiding in the development of the overall proposal process.
  3. Upon award of a job, the Senior Project Manager will advise, consult and lead the development of construction procurement; assist in the development of project procurement documents and discover various staging and delivery methods to ensure material is readily available to construction.
  4. Lead the project evaluation of the contract to develop the overall approach and contract profitability opportunities as well as the associated risk.
  5. Staff the project based upon the needs to fulfill all obligations assigned by the contract.
  6. Manage day-to-day work on the project during construction phases, coordinate and make recommendations regarding status of work, and champion the safety and quality programs through active leadership and participation.
  7. Attend and actively participate in selection sessions with sub-contractors and vendors to establish Cajun’s expectations and to demonstrate our ethics with regards to price seeking and overall selection. The Senior Project Manager must also lead the review of the safety and quality expectations that the sub-contractor will be expected to meet.
  8. Represent company in the local community while developing strong relationships throughout with all local businesses and government agencies.
  9. Assist in the development of the detailed reporting/metrics on all project statistics and be capable of addressing any variances to plan and forecasting of future issues. The Senior Project Manager must consistently review and monitor project work to ensure that progress is within expected guidelines and is completed on time and within budget.
  10. Review and provide recommendations on potential change orders on projects and process per contractual requirements, providing detailed analysis of impacts to the owner’s overall budget and schedule.
  11. Regularly review project schedules; analyze and monitor construction progress to determine impacts to schedule; and provide feedback to owners with a focus on the impacts of late engineering.
  12. Regularly attend and/or lead detailed internal project meetings with all staff present, as well as applicable sub-contractors, to ensure goals are understood and achieved.
  13. Work with the client’s contract department to ensure and enforce that all compliance is met regarding the timely payment of Cajun invoices.
  14. Continuously work with Cajun staff to define the roles of project team members, project reporting structures and frequency of interaction.
  15. Monitor and communicate project related issues, scope changes, variances and contingencies that may arise during the construction of projects to the business unit leader and executive management to keep all informed.
  16. Facilitate amicable solutions between Cajun and the owner.
  17. Resolve conflicts between sub-contractors and Cajun by assuming a lead role in any dispute resolution activities occurring on an assigned project.
  18. Monitor all contractor progress and performance, review and approve invoices, and resolve payment and project disputes.
  19. Coordinate project management matters, both current and future, with the appropriate owner representative.
  20. Advise, consult and communicate directly with the business unit leader or executive sponsor of the project.

Position Requirements:

  1. Education: Undergraduate university degree or higher (preferably in Engineering or Construction Management). Other relevant education, training or work experience may substitute for Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Minimum of 10 years of related industry experience, with at least 8 years in construction management or related experience for Petro-chemical projects.
  3. Ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external resources.
  4. Self-directed and able to function with ease as the leader of a team.
  5. Technically astute and strategic in thinking.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills, along with written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Ability to focus on details as required, and has the ability to work well within a deadline driven environment.
  8. Innovative project delivery methodology experience is desirable.
  9. Proven organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, as well as multiple personality types.
  10. Proficient with a computer and basic programs (i.e., Microsoft Excel, Word, Primavera and Access based programs)

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Use computer approximately 4-5 hours per day.
  2. Use phone, email and face to face communications to communicate daily with all applicable parties 5-6 hours per day.
  3. Visit project for weekly coordination meetings with client and Cajun staff as required.
  4. On occasion, capable of working between 10-12 hours per day as needed.
