What is a CAD engineer?

A CAD engineer is a highly skilled technician that works with computer-aided design (CAD) computer software. In this career, you specialize in designing complex buildings, machinery, and even automobiles using programs like AutoCAD. You may work with both two dimensional and three-dimensional designs. 2D modeling is referred to as surface modeling, as opposed to solid modeling, which is the 3D approach. Your job duties include creating detailed designs on your computer, translating design requirements into a finalized design specification, and presenting your designs to customers and management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD engineer?

To thrive as a CAD Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in drafting and design, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, and familiarity with industry standards are essential, with certifications in these tools often preferred. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and translate concepts into precise technical drawings. These competencies ensure the accurate and efficient development of design projects, reducing errors and streamlining product development.

What is the difference between Cad Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectCad EngineerMechanical Drafter
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, CAD certificationsAssociate's or diploma in drafting, CAD training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesArchitectural and engineering drafting departments
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, product design, constructionArchitectural, mechanical, and manufacturing industries

Cad Engineers and Mechanical Drafters both work with CAD software, but Cad Engineers focus on designing and analyzing engineering projects, while Mechanical Drafters create detailed technical drawings. Cad Engineers typically have a broader role involving engineering principles, whereas Mechanical Drafters specialize in drafting detailed mechanical components.

Are CAD engineers paid well?

CAD engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled CAD engineers proficient in software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks and holding relevant certifications tend to have higher earning potential. Overall, the role offers good compensation relative to technical design positions.

How much do CAD engineers earn?

CAD engineers typically earn between $60,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries. Salaries also vary based on the complexity of projects and the use of advanced CAD software tools.

Job description

For over four decades, Cirrus Logic has been propelled by the top engineers in mixed-signal processing. Our rockstar team thrives on solving complex challenges with innovative end-user solutions for the world's top consumer brands. Cirrus Logic is also known for its award-winning culture, which was built on a foundation of inclusion and fairness, meaningful community engagement, and delivering enjoyable employee experiences at every turn. But we couldn't do it without our extraordinary workforce - and that's where you come in. Join our team and help us continue to make Cirrus Logic an exceptional place to grow your career!
About the role
We are seeking a senior-level, hands-on CAD automation engineer to own and drive the design automation infrastructure that powers Cirrus Logic's design teams. In this role, you'll play a pivotal part in shaping how designs get built-creating and evolving scalable, production-ready automation solutions that boost productivity, streamline data management, and enforce consistent, reliable design flows.
You'll collaborate closely with design engineers, CAD teams, and EDA vendors to architect robust automation frameworks, simplify project bring-up, and enable smooth, efficient execution of complex design flows across multiple programs. Your work will directly impact design velocity, quality, and repeatability at scale.
This role is ideal for engineers who are energized by eliminating workflow friction, building smart automation systems, and turning fragmented processes into clean, efficient, and reusable infrastructure. If you enjoy combining software, methodology, and close collaboration to accelerate silicon development, this role gives you the platform-and ownership-to make a lasting impact.
What you'll do
This isn't a maintenance job-this is where you architect smarter workflows, champion new design methodologies, and elevate how an entire organization designs silicon.
You will:
  • Own and develop CAD automation infrastructure and workflows
  • Design and implement Python-based automation tools for design flows and data processing
  • Standardize and automate project setup, directory structures, and environment configuration
  • Improve design productivity through automation of repetitive tasks and workflows
  • Support design teams with tool usage, automation, and workflow optimization
  • Integrate and customize EDA tools to support design requirements
  • Collaborate with design teams to identify automation opportunities and implement solutions
  • Develop and maintain regression and validation frameworks for flows and tools
  • Manage design data, revision control, and release processes
  • Work with IT on infrastructure to enable scalable job execution and resource utilization
  • Interface with EDA vendors to resolve tool issues and drive longer-term automation and
    methodology improvements

You won't just support design-you'll amplify it. Your tools will accelerate silicon development, unlock new capabilities, streamline workflows, and enable Cirrus Logic engineers to do their best work at scale.
What we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, with 7+ years of experience in CAD, design automation, or EDA tools development in a production environment
  • Strong Python programming skills, with a proven track record of building, maintaining, and scaling production-quality automation tools
  • Hands-on experience with design automation and scripting in semiconductor design environments
  • Experience using revision control systems such as Git or Perforce to support collaborative, disciplined development
  • Fluency in Linux and command-line environments, including scripting, debugging, and automation
  • Solid understanding of IC design flows and EDA tools, and how automation enables efficient execution at scale
  • Experience with project setup, environment configuration, and flow deployment across multiple designs
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently debug complex workflow, tooling, and infrastructure issues
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively across design, CAD, IT, and vendor teams
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, with 7+ years of experience supporting design CAD or EDA tools
  • Experience working with SKILL, Tcl, and/or shell scripting, especially in EDA flow customization
  • Hands-on experience with the Cadence design environment and associated analog and digital design tools
  • Familiarity with job scheduling and compute management systems such as LSF or equivalent
  • Experience with data processing, reporting, and visualization, enabling insight into flow performance and design metrics
  • Background in building regression frameworks and automated validation systems to ensure flow quality and stability
  • Familiarity with PDKs, design databases, data formats, and tapeout flows
  • Experience supporting analog or mixed-signal design teams, with an understanding of their unique workflow needs
