Job Description

The Press Operator sets up and operates brake press machines to bend, form, and shape metal according to detailed blueprints and customer specifications. This role works a consistent 55-hour workweek with the option to choose between two fixed schedules and requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate brake press machines to bend, form, and shape metal according to blueprints and customer specifications.
  • Produce high-quality parts that consistently meet customer specifications and tolerances.
  • Perform in-process and final quality checks using precise measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, protractors, and other measuring tools as needed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and machine programs to identify and correct the root cause of non-conforming parts.
  • Increase production efficiency by reducing set-up time, optimizing machine usage, and maintaining quality standards.
  • Follow and maintain all required documentation procedures related to production and quality.
  • Complete necessary training and certification to operate hi-lo equipment safely and efficiently when required for job duties.
  • Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Work with a sense of urgency to meet scheduled daily production goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and communicate clearly with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to set up and operate brake press machines for metal fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints accurately.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring tools, including calipers, micrometers, 360-degree protractors, tape measures, and other inspection tools.
  • Math skills, including the ability to perform calculations using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Knowledge of bending, forming, and rolling techniques for sheet metal.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn and retain technical information.
  • Ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment with a strong sense of urgency to meet daily production goals.
  • Acute attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to apply logic to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of experience in metal fabrication and/or brake press operation.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and twist frequently for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Eligibility to obtain hi-lo certification, which requires a valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to adjust machine programs to improve part quality and efficiency.
  • Experience with press brake operation, punch press, and general press operation.
  • Experience in sheet metal fabrication and production environments.
  • Experience with machine operation, general labor, and assembly work in a manufacturing setting.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools and inspection tools for fabrication and quality verification.
  • Experience with hi-lo (forklift) operation or certification.
  • Comfort working in a structured, high-output production environment.
  • Willingness to train and develop further technical skills on advanced brake press equipment.

The work takes place in a metal fabrication environment operating large brake presses and related equipment, with a strong focus on safety, organization, and cleanliness. The role requires standing, walking, bending, and twisting for extended periods and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Team members may need to operate hi-lo equipment once certified. The dress code includes steel-toed boots or shoes, jeans that are not excessively torn, baggy, or saggy, and a dark T-shirt without prominent graphics; shorts and tank tops are not permitted.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr.
