Job description

Operations Manager

Classification: Exempt

Reports to: VP of Manufacturing

Direct Reports: Supervisors, Team Leaders, Skilled and Unskilled Labor in the Manufacturing Facility at the Birmingham, AL location

 

Summary

The Operations Manager is responsible for driving manufacturing excellence to increase efficiency and effectiveness within the facility through demonstrated leadership skills and a track record of continuous improvement in all manufacturing core competencies including safety, quality, growth, and productivity. This position will involve providing leadership and guidance to both skilled and unskilled labor forces, detailed record keeping, analyzing data/information, having the ability to work independently or in a team environment, public speaking, critical thinking, and using good judgment in decision making.

Essential Functions/Duties

  1. Ensure that all employees observe and maintain a safe working environment.
  2. Develop and communicate the vision and strategy for the plant to position it for the future.
  3. Establish, communicate, support, motivate, measure, and evaluate results for all goals and objectives essential for all aspects of plant operations.
  4. Lead the organization to develop and follow plant metrics that enable the business unit to efficiently monitor progress leading to the attainment of site objectives and a continuous improvement culture.
  5. Evaluate, manage, and ultimately be responsible for meeting plant targets on operational costs, equipment/process efficiencies (labor, energy, etc.), and departmental productivity.
  6. Ensure facility assets are appropriately maintained through planning and implementation of maintenance programs and procedures
  7. Manage overall spending against budget including manpower, capital, and maintenance budgets.
  8. Prepare and submit the timely delivery of activity and monthly reports that keep the Vice President of Manufacturing and others in the company informed about the status of plant activities.

  10. Must have a solid working knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook applications.
  11. Must possess an active, unexpired driver’s license and a clear Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

Physical/Cognitive Demands

This is largely a physically active role including walking long distances (over uneven surfaces) to/within our production facility, lifting 50lbs or more, and standing for long periods. Position also requires bending, stooping, squatting or standing as necessary. Cognitive abilities required include deductive reasoning, information ordering, oral comprehension, oral expression, problem sensitivity, written comprehension, and written expression.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Evening and weekend work will be required as job duties demand.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Minimum of 10 years of manufacturing experience in fasteners or steel products.
  1. Minimum 5 years of prior experience as a operations manager.
  2. Working knowledge of ISO 9001

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. B.S. degree is preferred but a combination of higher education and experience will be considered in lieu of a 4-year degree 
  2. Bilingual English/Spanish language skills is a plus
