What is a business development representative?

Business Development Representatives (BDRs) are sales professionals who focus on prospecting, qualifying leads, and setting up meetings for the sales team. They initiate contact with potential clients—primarily through cold calls, emails, and networking—to generate interest in a company's products or services. BDRs play a crucial role in the early stages of the sales cycle by identifying business opportunities and helping to grow the customer base. Their work allows account executives and senior sales staff to focus on closing deals with well-qualified leads. The position often serves as an entry point to a career in sales or business development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business development representative?

To thrive as a Business Development Representative, you need strong communication, sales acumen, and a solid understanding of market research, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, lead generation tools, and sales automation platforms is commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, resilience, and the ability to build rapport help set top performers apart. These capabilities are crucial for identifying new business opportunities, building client relationships, and driving company growth.

What are some common challenges faced by business development representatives, and how can they be overcome?

Business Development Representatives (BDRs) often encounter challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling rejection, and balancing prospecting with follow-up tasks. Overcoming these hurdles requires resilience, strong communication skills, and strategic time management. Successful BDRs leverage CRM tools, research prospects thoroughly, and continuously refine their outreach techniques to improve response rates. Collaborating closely with sales and marketing teams also helps in sharing insights and refining messaging for better results.

Job description

Gravitee is a 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ Leader, on a mission to govern the world's intelligence.
We deliver the industry's most advanced platform for Any API, Any Event, and Any AI Agent, trusted by global leaders like Michelin, Roche, and Blue Yonder.
Why Gravitee?
  • The Mission: We are bridging the gap between traditional tech and the new frontier of AI Security.
  • The Momentum: We combine the credibility of a market leader with the high-octane speed of a startup.
  • The DNA: We hire "Hold Nothing Back" individuals - passionate professionals who want to redefine how the world interacts with technology.
The Role
AI is rewriting the rules of business, and Gravitee is at the centre of that transformation. As our Business Development Representative you won't just be supporting a product; you'll be shaping how the world perceives and adopts the next generation of AI-driven digital experiences.
Reporting to our BDR Manager and working with a global team of 12 BDRs, you'll play a key role in creating the first conversations that turn prospects into new Gravitee customers. We're growing quickly, so it's fast-paced, fun, and highly rewarding.
Supported by our proprietary GTM Engineering engine, you'll spend less time on manual admin and more time having high-intent, human conversation about the next era of API and AI Agent management.
What You'll Be Doing
At Gravitee, impact isn't abstract - it's visible and global. In this role, you will:
  • Partner with our GTM Engineers to build automated, personalized and compelling outreach campaigns across email and LinkedIn.
  • Use AI-enabled sales and marketing platforms such as Clay, HeyReach, Smartlead and Salesfinity to improve targeting, scale outreach and maximize your effectiveness.
  • Respond quickly to inbound enquiries from marketing campaigns, qualifying interest and turning strong leads into meaningful sales opportunities.
  • Speak with a wide range of prospects and stakeholders within our ideal customer profile, uncovering their pain points, priorities and buying motivations.
  • Continuously test new messaging, outbound sequences and calling techniques to increase engagement and drive as many qualified meetings as possible.
  • Build your social presence and become a trusted, go-to resource for prospects in your market.
  • Share valuable market and prospect insights with the wider GTM team to help improve our overall go-to-market motion.
  • Work closely with Product and Sales to keep building your product knowledge and deepen your understanding of our customers' challenges.

Your impact will be visible, measurable, and global.
Essential Skills
  • 2+ years of BDR experience in a high growth B2B SaaS environment, ideally selling a technical product.
  • Growth Mindset - strong belief your abilities, intelligence and talents will be developed through effort, persistence and learning.
  • Cold calling master - enjoy picking up the phone speaking to prospects and improving your conversion rate every day.
  • Technology and AI Curiosity: have an interest and some hands on experience using the latest AI and prospecting tools to improve your results.
  • Resilience, Grit and self motivation- see rejection as an opportunity to learn, get up every day with a fresh mindset to go again.
  • Coachable - constant improvement through feedback and experimentation, taking new ideas on board and being open to different ways of doing things.
Who Thrives Here
Our growth is powered by people who bring passion to their craft, professionalism to their execution, and a commitment to excellence. You'll thrive here if you:
  • Care deeply about high-quality output and brand clarity.
  • Are curious, adaptable, and energized by the fast-moving AI landscape.
  • Take full ownership of your projects from concept to completion.
  • Value a culture of openness, collaboration, and constant evolution.

Bonus points if you've worked with APIs, cloud-native platforms, AI-enabled systems, or open source, but curiosity matters most.
Life at Gravitee
At Gravitee, we invest in humans, not just roles.
You'll get:
  • Competitive medical coverage
  • Pension / 401k program options
  • Stock options - you build it, you own it
  • 25 days holiday + in-country national holidays
  • 3 mental health days + wellness allowance
  • Your birthday off
  • Professional development budget to fuel your growth
  • Hybrid work culture with hubs across regions
  • Quarterly team events + annual offsite at an exciting location
  • A meaningful, progressive, global company culture that is as fun as it is hardworking
  • Endless growth opportunities

Salary: Up to $140,000 OTE (Base & Salary)
