Job Summary

The Business Development Manager (BDM) for Fleet Management Solutions (FMS) is responsible for developing new customer business within an assigned sales territory. The BDM educates prospects and builds their value perception of Ryder's services by using the Ryder Sales Process. This is accomplished by developing sales plans, analyzing the profitability of prospects, and fully understanding the competitive influences and risks with each account. Your ability to connect, build value and build relationships is critical.

Essential Functions

Sales Strategy and Pipeline Development

Develop a pre-sales strategy for target accounts and build a sales activity pipeline sufficient to meet and exceed required quota revenues. Respond proactively to furnished leads and represent the full spectrum of Ryder services. Work with Account Representatives (ARs) and Customer Development Managers (CDMs) to transition accounts and increase sales opportunities. Partner with National Sales to develop and generate sales opportunities within the assigned territory, and with Directors of Sales Development (DSDs) to develop Dedicated Contract Carriage (DCC) opportunities. Ensure new customer orientation is completed.

Scope of decision making: Selecting and prioritizing target accounts. Determining the sales strategy and resources needed to win each account.

Needs Assessment and Account Selling

Identify prospect needs, requirements and value components through quality needs assessment and value-based proposal preparation. Develop and refine account selling strategies on a continual basis to improve effectiveness. Keep General Managers (GMs) and CDMs informed of sales in progress and their potential impact on their areas of responsibility. Contribute to an effective transition of accounts sold and complete the administrative functions necessary to support each account.

Scope of decision making: Structuring competitive, profitable proposals. Deciding when and how to engage internal partners in the sales cycle.

Reporting, Compliance and Collaboration

Report sales activity to management and comply with sales protocol and Sales Operations Management (SOM) requirements. Create supportive working relationships with Customer Business Units (CBUs). Leverage all available resources to expand new opportunities, including Maintenance and Data Services (MDS), Safety and Finance. Develop account profile information on all prospect solicitations.

Scope of decision making: Accurate and timely reporting of pipeline activity. Compliance with company procedures and sales protocol.

Commit to ongoing training and improvement of sales skills, industry knowledge and personal growth needs.
