Job description

General Role and Responsibilities:

Coordinates activities to ensure that District vehicles, including buses, maintenance trucks and equipment are properly maintained.


Specific Responsibilities in This Position:

· Assures adequate maintenance and repair records are maintained for District vehicles and equipment.

· Participates in preparation for Annual State Police Bus inspection.

· Maintains the ability to diagnose, repair, rebuild and make necessary adjustments on all vehicle systems.

· Maintains a thorough knowledge and ability to repair components on all systems, including the ability to operate shop equipment.

· Performs troubleshooting and related repairs on District vehicles.

· Supply and maintain your own tools.

· Maintain violation free CDL license.

· Must be prepared to drive all vehicles when necessary.

· Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Transportation

Specific Skills and Knowledge for this position:

· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

· Ability to write routine reports and correspondences.

· Ability to speak effectively before employees or groups of employees.

· Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

· Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

· Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

· Past experience or training on diesel/gas heavy-duty engines.

· Must be able to obtain or have a current valid CDL, with air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsement; CDL must be point free.

· Must have or become ASE or equivalent certification as determined by the Director of Transportation. Probationary period will be given to obtain License. ASE certification or equivalent must be completed within 18 months of hire.

· High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student, staff and community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

The applicant must possess the desire and drive to obtain the below mentioned certifications by evidencing continual enrollment and successful completion in approved courses. Necessary certification by either ASE or any organization accredited by the Commission of the National Association of Trade/Technical Schools or by acknowledgement of the Director of Transportation based on prior training and/or experience in the following areas:

· Diesel Engine

· Diesel Electronics

· Gasoline Engine

· Automatic Transmission/Trans Axle

· Electrical System

· Air Conditioning Systems & Refrigerant Recovery

· Total Drive Train

· Heave Duty Brakes

· Anti-lock Braking Systems

· Suspension and Steering

· Welding

· Body Repair

· Painting and Refinishing

· School Bus special equipment

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds such as bus parts and chemical containers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet and noisy environments.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical bus and equipment. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gas fumes and spray. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud.
