LSC Transportation CenterThis is a position as Lead Bus Mechanic for the Lafayette School Corporation. The Lead School Bus Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and safety inspection of school buses and related vehicles. Specifically, the Lead Mechanic ensures that all Lafayette School Corporation school buses and service vehicles are in compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards. This role also involves supervising a team of mechanics. Interested INTERNAL candidates should complete an INTERNAL application through the employment tab of LSC website. POSITION TITLE: Lead Bus Mechanic
Wage: $32.00 per hour
Hours: 40 hours per week Monday through Friday (Some overtime will be required)
Shift: 8:00am-4:30pm

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
  • The Lead School Bus Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and safety inspection of school buses and related vehicles. Specifically, the Lead Mechanic ensures that all Lafayette School Corporation school buses and service vehicles are in compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards. This role also involves supervising a team of mechanics. The Lead Mechanic must be experienced in vehicle diagnostics, repair processes, management of maintenance schedules and leadership.
REPORTS TO:
  • The Bus Mechanic reports directly to the Director of Transportation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma
  • Completion of ASE Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus
  • 10 Years of School Bus Maintenance and Repair experience
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently possess or eligible to earn a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with B, P, and Air Brake endorsements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work involves standing, crouching, crawling, lifting and carrying
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for considerable periods of time
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including outdoors and in confined spaces.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Job is performed in an automotive/bus repair shop environment; work is frequently with dirty and greasy parts, contains diesel engine noise and fumes. Training on appropriate safety rules and protective equipment is required during the onboarding process.
WORK TASKS / RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Ensures that Lafayette School Corporation buses and service vehicles are in compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards
  • Performs preventive maintenance program for school buses and service vehicles
  • Assists with the school bus inspection program
  • Participates in an effective repair program for vehicle assemblies and parts
  • Supports transportation garage operations
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of diesel engines and other mechanical components of the school buses and service vehicles
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in vehicle repair shops
  • Knowledge of different mechanical, air, hydraulic, and electrical systems used on transportation equipment
  • Knowledge of Indiana Inspection Laws
  • Working Knowledge of Diagnostic Software
  • Working Knowledge of Air Brake Systems, Steering and Suspension, Transmissions, Body Systems, Engines, and After-Treatment Components
  • Working Knowledge of Electrical Systems to Include Conventional and Multi-Plexing
  • Working Knowledge of Special Needs Lifts and Securements

  • Supervise and lead a team of school bus mechanics in the maintenance and repair of buses and other school transportation vehicles

  • Software/word processing skills for writing memos and recordkeeping, accessing state computer, and repair computer-controlled engines and brake system on buses
