Job description

Summary Description:
Under general supervision, operates a radio bus used to cover bus routes in cases of breakdowns, accidents and emergencies. Takes over routes on a moment's notice. Functions as part of the dispatch team at the assigned depot, often taking charge of the radio communications, telephones and route coverage when the dispatcher is not on duty or is otherwise occupied. Supervises a number of assigned substitute bus operators and attendants. Helps orient bus operators and attendants to new routes and assists them with operating problems. Is part of the management team of the depot.Physical Demands:Ability to meet prescribed pre-employment and annual physical examination and testing requirements for bus operator I.Special Requirements:Must maintain certification as a Maryland school bus operator.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Working knowledge of bus routes in an assigned area; working knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Working knowledge of the local street and road system. Knowledge of basic arithmetic. Working mechanical knowledge of school bus in order to complete pre-and post-trip inspection of equipment as required by Maryland State commercial driver's license requirements, or ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge. Ability to operate a school bus in the safe and efficient transportation of children. Ability to read, write, communicate orally, understand and carry out written and oral instructions, maintain effective control over groups of children, and work harmoniously with children and others. Ability to read and follow a road map. Ability to drive any size or type school bus in the fleet. Good human relations skills. Ability to supervise bus operators and attendants. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education Training Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Experience as a school bus operator. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of, or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver's License (air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements), or equivalent.
