Since 1966, IU Campus Bus Service has been providing bus service on the Bloomington campus. IU Bloomington's 1940-acre campus is often considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation and is set in USA Today's #2 Best College Town in America.
IU Bloomington is home to close to 43,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 19,000 faculty, staff, and part-time employees.
Campus Bus provides transportation to over three million rides a year and operates a six-route system with approximately 30 buses, 50 bus operators, 4 mechanics, and a management team. It has a long-standing partnership with the local transit system, further extending its reach and resources.
Campus Bus is a business unit within Auxiliary Business Services (ABS). ABS operate in a shared services model that supports finance, human resources, payroll, and marketing needs of Campus Bus.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Supervises the operations of a public transit service in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining positive customer relations with passengers and other members of the University community.
  • Schedules bus operators; assign buses to routes; advise bus operators of detours and other day to day operating changes; assures that bus operators assignments are covered due to vacations, illnesses, holidays, and no-shows; counsels bus operators on complaints from passengers and the general public; verifies and approves timekeeping records in Kuali TIME; approves leaves, updates PIE work records; manages ETA SPOT bus tracking; monitors and appropriately responds to electronic communication media such as telephone calls, IUBUS emails, and social media; and other related duties as assigned.
  • Develops, and prepares public transit routes (both published and internal) and bus operator work assignments as well as evaluates the effectiveness of such routes, and works assignments.
  • Monitors the safety and mechanical operation of the public transit vehicles operating during their assigned shift and takes actions to ensure safe and efficient operations or report any variances from established standards to appropriate authority. Responds to accidents and ensure that all Federal and State regulations and University policies and Campus Bus procedures for handling accidents are followed.
  • Assists in the development of customer service training and refresher training programs, drafting departmental materials, monitoring operator performances, and making recommendations regarding employee training to improve customer service.
General Responsibilities
  • Supervises the operations of a public transit service, including scheduling bus operators, assigning buses to routes, advising bus operators of detours and other day-to-day operating changes, assuring that bus schedules have sufficient staff coverage, counseling bus operators on complaints from passengers and the general public, etc.
  • Participates in the recruiting, training, and evaluation of campus bus operators.
  • Develops and prepares public transit routes and schedules and bus operator work assignments; evaluates the effectiveness of such routes, schedules, and work assignments.
  • Conforms to all university, local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations applicable to public transportation operations. Monitors the safety and mechanical operation of the public transit vehicles operating during their assigned shift and takes actions to ensure safe and efficient operations or report any variances from established standards.
  • Prepares logs, forms, and reports on the ridership and operations of the assigned public transportation vehicle.
  • Responds to accidents and ensure that all federal and state regulations and university policies and campus bus procedures for handling accidents are followed.
  • Ensures Fleet Maintenance Attendants are adequately scheduled so that the fleet of transit buses are washed, fueled, and cleaned each evening.
  • Works with Diesel Mechanics to coordinate service, repair, and other maintenance.
  • Operates a public transit vehicle at times when no bus operators are available.

  • Completion of bus operator training program

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
  • CDL license class B with passenger and air brake endorsements and ability to be insured by Indiana University. These are Safety Sensitive positions as defined by the Federal Transit Administration and are therefore subject to all current and future FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations. Upon Hire

  • Ability to establish working knowledge of various information technology, such as PIE used for work assignment scheduling, BusGenius used for bus tracking, automatic passenger counting, and automated voice announcements, Kuali TIME for employee timekeeping, and any other future information technology utilized by the department.
  • Ability to keep legible records.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using a two-way radio.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships.
  • Ability to communicate with subordinates, members of the public, passengers, and other employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires stationary positioning for long periods of time. The work assigned to this classification is light physical work. The person in this role may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, and inclement weather. It also requires a CDL-B issued by the State of Indiana and the ability to be insured by Indiana University. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation.

Work Hours
Monday through Friday: 7:30am - 4:30pm
Evenings and weekends may be required, if coverage is needed.
