Substitute Bus Assistant


Job Title: Substitute Bus Assistant Reports To: Director of Transportation Classification: Substitute Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt Days: 177 Salary: See Substitute Compensation Plan Contract: None Date Revised: 11/15/2023 Primary Purpose: Ride on the bus to assist the driver in providing a safe and orderly trip for the passengers when regular assistant is absent Qualifications/Skills:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be 18 years and older.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to work with fellow employees.
  • Mature judgment.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills.
  • Physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to assist in evacuating the bus in an emergency.

Experience:

  • Day care, nursing home or related experiences dealing with special needs individuals preferred.
Major Duties and
Responsibilities:

Student Management:

  • Maintain student discipline on bus.
  • Assist fragile pupils with special needs.
  • Maintain personal conduct and appearance that serves as an example to children. 

Safety:

  • Aid driver in maintaining order and safety.
  • Perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus, if needed: walking to rear of bus, exiting the rear door, and/or lifting students in emergency situations.

Other:

  • Maintain cleanliness of bus interior.
  • Participate in cross training
  • Establish and maintain a good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and co-workers.
  • Attend in-service training classes and safety meetings as required by the department.
  • Learn assigned routes in order to assist a substitute driver.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:
None Equipment Used: Wheelchair lift ramp, locks, seatbelts, harnesses, car seats, special adaptive equipment. Working Conditions:
