Position Summary
The Senior Burner Technician is responsible for the successful startup, commissioning, electrical/controls troubleshooting, and performance optimization of industrial combustion systems at customer facilities. This role plays a critical part in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient burner operation in demanding production environments, directly influencing customer satisfaction and long-term business relationships.
The position requires extensive travel, strong technical independence, and the ability to make sound, real-time operational decisions while representing the company professionally in the field.
Core Responsibilities
- Commissioning & Optimization: Troubleshoot, commission, tune, and optimize industrial burner, boiler, furnace, and dryer systems—including integration with PLC-based controls, HMIs, fuel trains, flame safeguards, actuators, and instrumentation.
- Electrical & Controls Troubleshooting: Perform advanced root-cause troubleshooting on industrial electrical and control systems (24VDC through 460VAC), including control circuits, motor starters, VFDs, interlocks, and flame safeguard systems.
- PLC Systems: Configure, diagnose, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems (Allen-Bradley and/or Automation Direct), ensuring seamless system integration and operational support.
- Instrumentation & Maintenance: Install, maintain, and calibrate electrical and process instrumentation to ensure accurate and reliable system performance.
- Field Leadership: Work independently at customer facilities, interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings. Provide field escalation support, technical leadership, and mentoring to less experienced technicians.
- Safety & Compliance: Execute all work in strict accordance with NFPA 85/86, local regulations, and company safety requirements, including safety checks, interlock verification, and startup validation.
- Customer & Internal Collaboration: Provide on-call technical support, customer training, and detailed written service reports (summarizing work performed, emissions data, and recommendations). Collaborate with Sales and Engineering to provide field feedback for product improvement.
Qualifications & Skills
Technical Expertise:
- Deep knowledge and ability to work with gas and oil-fired burner systems, boiler operations, and equipment startup.
- Strong proficiency in basic instrumentation, controls, and emission control.
- Experience with both high-voltage and low-voltage industrial systems.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and P&IDs.
