What are some common challenges a Building Super might face when managing tenant requests and building maintenance simultaneously?

A Building Super often juggles multiple responsibilities, including responding to urgent tenant requests while ensuring routine maintenance tasks are completed on schedule. Common challenges include prioritizing work orders, efficiently communicating with tenants and property managers, and addressing unexpected emergencies such as plumbing or heating failures. Effective time management and strong problem-solving skills are essential to handle these overlapping demands. Most Building Supers also collaborate closely with contractors and other maintenance staff, which requires clear coordination to keep building operations running smoothly.

A building super typically works full-time to oversee daily maintenance, repairs, and building operations. The schedule can vary depending on the property size and responsibilities, but most building supers are employed on a full-time basis to ensure building safety and functionality.

How to become a super in a building?

To become a building superintendent, you typically need experience in building maintenance or construction, along with knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work. Many superintendents gain skills through on-the-job training, apprenticeships, or technical courses, and some positions require a high school diploma or equivalent. Certifications in building management or safety can also improve job prospects.

Assistant Store Manager - Hardware and Building Supply

Assistant Store Manager - Hardware and Building Supply

Mega Building Supply

Manhattan, NY

$75K - $95K/yr

Full-time

Posted 17 days ago

Job description

We’re an independent building supply and hardware store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and we’re growing. We need an assistant store manager who takes ownership of the floor, the staff, and the numbers — not someone who just keeps the lights on.
What you’ll own:
∙ Day-to-day floor operations and staff supervision
∙ Customer experience from walk-in to checkout
∙ Driving sales — upselling, product knowledge, building contractor and building super relationships
∙ Receiving, inventory integrity, and merchandising standards
 ∙ Opening and closing responsibilities
You’re the right fit if:
∙ You have 3+ years managing or supervising in a hardware, building supply, or trades-adjacent retail environment
∙ You understand the contractor and building superintendent customer — how they think, what they need, and how to earn their repeat business
∙ You’ve managed floor staff and aren’t afraid of a direct conversation
∙ You treat the store like it’s yours
Compensation: $75,000–$95,000 annually, based on experience
To apply: Tell us where you’ve managed in hardware or building supply, how many people you supervised, and one thing you did that measurably improved store performance.
