What is a building performance engineer?

Building Performance Engineers are professionals who assess and optimize the efficiency, sustainability, and comfort of buildings. They analyze energy use, environmental impact, and indoor environmental quality, and recommend improvements to building systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and insulation. Their goal is to ensure that buildings operate efficiently, meet regulatory standards, and provide healthy environments for occupants. They often use specialized software and conduct on-site evaluations to identify areas for improvement. Building Performance Engineers play a key role in green building initiatives and energy conservation efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building performance engineer?

To thrive as a Building Performance Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, building science, and energy modeling, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and certifications like LEED or CEM. Familiarity with energy modeling software (e.g., eQUEST, EnergyPlus), building automation systems, and simulation tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities are essential for optimizing building efficiency, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering sustainable, cost-effective solutions.

What are some common challenges building performance engineers face when working on projects with multidisciplinary teams?

Building Performance Engineers often collaborate with architects, HVAC specialists, and construction managers, which can present challenges in aligning energy efficiency goals with architectural design and budget constraints. Effective communication and negotiation skills are crucial to ensure that sustainability targets are integrated from the early design stages and maintained throughout the project. Navigating differing priorities and technical language among team members is a typical aspect of the role, but it also provides valuable opportunities for professional growth and learning.

What is the difference between Building Performance Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectBuilding Performance EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsOften requires engineering degree, certifications like LEED or ASHRAETypically requires mechanical engineering degree, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFocus on building systems, energy efficiency, sustainability projectsDesign, analyze, and maintain mechanical systems across various industries
Industry UsageCommon in green building, energy consulting, and building design firmsWidespread in manufacturing, HVAC, automotive, and industrial sectors

Building Performance Engineers specialize in optimizing building systems for energy efficiency and sustainability, often working closely with architects and environmental consultants. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing and maintaining mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering credentials, Building Performance Engineers focus more on building-specific projects, whereas Mechanical Engineers work on diverse mechanical systems.

At Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI), we bring together expertise and innovation to solve the most complex challenges. Since 1978, we've supported mission-driven organizations in designing systems and environments that advance society and improve lives. Today, with more than 1000 professionals across 23 offices, we help shape the future of healthcare, science and technology, energy, education, and other vital sectors.
From elevating patient care in Mayo Clinic's world-class hospitals to enabling discovery in high-containment laboratories for U.S. agencies and driving environmental progress with Microsoft's renowned Thermal Energy Center, our work enriches the human experience, safeguards the environment, and pushes the boundaries of possibility.
AEI consistently earns national recognition from leading industry publications, including Building Design+Construction, Engineering News-Record, and Consulting-Specifying Engineer, with distinctions such as being named the #1 Laboratory Engineering Firm in the nation and receiving multiple Best of the Best Project awards, underscoring the lasting legacy of our work.
At AEI, you'll join a collaborative community where your expertise fuels innovation, your ideas drive progress, and your work helps shape a brighter future.
As a Building Performance Consultant II in our Madison office, you will help us empower our clients to achieve energy-efficient building solutions, save global environments, and create a better, greener future for all.
Why We Need You:
In this role, you will support the high performance design process through analysis of high performance design strategies and concepts, primarily through performance modeling; develop and optimize analytical tools and processes to provide timely, design-relevant insight to internal design teams, partners and clients. You will interpret and utilize information set forth in basis of design as well as information gathered from users, project partners, field surveys, and code research.
Expertise of our most successful Building Performance Consultant II:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering (or another engineering discipline) from an accredited program; or commensurate degree and experience with building systems.
  • Advanced understanding of building systems across disciplines and proven experience in at least one discipline such as HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope systems.
  • Advanced understanding of major tenets of high performance design including renewable and alternative energy strategies, daylighting, embodied energy, indoor environmental quality, material composition, water efficiency, life cycle assessment, and built environment planning.
  • Ability to use at least one building system simulation tool, including EnergyPlus, IES-VE, TRNSYS, DOE-2 (eQuest), TRACE, CFD, or Radiance, for consulting and analysis. Strong understanding and application of simulation tools for the appropriate systems and technologies.
  • Experience in computer operation for building system analysis and engineering calculation programs.
  • Proficiency in use of CAD/BIM software as necessary for building performance analysis and consulting.
  • Understanding of applicable rating systems, design codes and standards, and ability to interpret them.

Effective skills to help you flourish:
  • Industry certification or license applicable to building system design and performance including but not limited to LEED AP, ASHRAE HPDP, ASHRAE BEMP, ASHRAE BEAP, Green Globes Professional, or AEE CEM.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE) or the ability to obtain the Professional Engineering license (PE) in one or more states.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn application programming language (C++, Ruby, Python, Visual Basic, etc.).
  • Understanding of applicable rating systems, design codes and standards, and ability to interpret them.
  • Strong spoken and written communications skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Quick technical comprehension and motivation focused on client outcomes.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Effective working individually and within team environments.

When you work here, you can expect:
  • A flexible, collaborative environment where your well-being matters-because your best work happens when you're supported.
  • Real opportunities to grow-through mentorship, professional development programs, and exposure to high-impact projects across disciplines.
  • To collaborate with inspiring teammates who challenge the status quo, foster innovation, and pave the way for future leaders.
  • A benefits package that offers health, dental, vision, and retirement, a performance-based year-end bonus, and thoughtful perks tailored to your needs-whether that's a flexible work environment, wellness resources, or community-focused initiatives, we'll continue to invest in.

If this dynamic environment and the chance to contribute to transformative projects resonate with your ambitions, we would love to connect with you. Join us and make an impact!
