Job description

Job Summary

The Director of Respiratory Care Services plans and directs the operational, budgetary and personnel activities of the Respiratory Care Services.  Develops services, policies, procedures, resource plans, and coordinates department programs, services and activities with other departments and services to meet overall hospital goals and objectives.  Responsible for management and supervision of department staff.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Work Experience:

Five years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist working in adult critical care, including five years of progressive leadership within adult specialty and emergency service units are required.

Licensure/Certification

Current Respiratory Care practitioner (RCP) license from the Texas Medical Board.

Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Current BLS certification.

Current ACLS certification; may be obtained within one year of being in the role.

Education and Training:

Graduate of an AMAaccredited school of Respiratory Care with a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care (BSRC) or Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) is required. 

A Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, or a related healthcare field may be considered with appropriate respiratory therapy credentials and experience.

Skills:

  1. Ability to plan and execute a full range of administrative tasks in operating a large and complex department.
  2. Ability to analyze complex problems and situations and realize potential effects of proposed actions.
  3. Knowledge of budget preparation, purchasing bookkeeping and personnel management.
  4. In-depth understanding of respiratory therapy principles, including mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  5. Proficiency in evaluating and diagnosing respiratory conditions to develop appropriate treatment plans.
  6. Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and safety protocols relevant to respiratory care.
  7. Familiarity with quality assurance processes and performance improvement methodologies to enhance service delivery.
  8. Awareness of current respiratory care technologies, including ventilators, nebulizers, and oxygen delivery systems.
  9. Understanding of financial principles to manage departmental budgets and resources effectively.
  10. Proficiency in medical terminology and coding systems pertinent to respiratory care documentation.
  11. Experience with EHR systems for patient data management and reporting.
  12. Knowledge of training and mentoring techniques to promote continuous professional growth among staff.
  13. Understanding of collaborative practices with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  14. Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team of respiratory therapists and support staff.
