Job description

  • Location: Butner, North Carolina (Murdoch Developmental Center and Central Regional Hospital), with additional clinic days at Cherry Hospital (Goldsboro) and Broughton Hospital (Morganton); on-site
  • Employment Type: Independent Contractor (1099), part-time, per-assignment
  • Schedule: Scheduled clinic days at assigned facilities, weekday daytime hours, Eastern Time; approximately 96 hours per facility per year
  • Agency Environment: North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF); on-site optometric care for residents of state psychiatric hospitals and developmental centers

Position Overview

CLFC Healthcare and Communications is building its North Carolina optometry team to deliver on-site eye and vision care at state-operated healthcare facilities serving adults living with mental illness and intellectual or developmental disabilities. Primary sites are Murdoch Developmental Center and Central Regional Hospital in Butner, with additional clinic days available at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro and Broughton Hospital in Morganton.

This is patient-centered clinical optometry in an institutional setting, delivered on a flexible per-assignment basis with multi-facility coverage opportunities across North Carolina.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye and vision examinations for resident populations.
  • Diagnose and manage ocular conditions, and prescribe corrective lenses and treatment as indicated.
  • Adapt examination techniques for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities or behavioral health needs.
  • Coordinate with facility nursing and medical staff on resident eye-care plans.
  • Document each encounter in accordance with facility protocols.
  • Refer to ophthalmology and specialty care when clinically indicated.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) from an accredited school of optometry.
  • Active North Carolina optometry license, or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to start of assignment.
  • Clinical optometry experience.
  • Ability to clear required background screening.
  • Comfort working with vulnerable adult populations in a state facility setting.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving intellectual and developmental disability populations.
  • Experience in institutional, long-term-care, or state facility settings.
  • Availability for multi-site coverage across North Carolina facilities.

Compensation and Engagement Details

  • Hourly rate range: $128 to $155 per hour (1099 independent contractor), commensurate with experience and credentials.
  • Per-assignment scheduling with multi-facility coverage opportunities across North Carolina.
  • CLFC provides program management and administrative support, including credentialing coordination and scheduling.
