Job description

Overview

Salem Media is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Staff Accountant to support key accounting and financial reporting functions across the organization. This role will be responsible for cash posting, reconciliations, month-end close activities, financial reporting support, and tracking programmatic revenue performance.

The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting fundamentals, analytical thinking, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with operational leadership while contributing to the accuracy and integrity of company financial reporting.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and post journal entries as part of the monthly close process
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts and roll forward schedules
  • Support month-end and year-end closing activities, including financial analysis and reporting
  • Assist with quarterly and annual financial reporting requirements

Cash Posting & Revenue Tracking

  • Process and post cash receipts and accounts receivable transactions
  • Track, analyze, and report programmatic revenue activity
  • Perform accounts receivable analysis and reporting
  • Maintain deferred revenue roll forwards and related reconciliations
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data and supporting documentation

General Ledger & Reconciliations

  • Analyze general ledger activity and investigate variances or discrepancies
  • Prepare account reconciliations and maintain supporting schedules
  • Assist with fixed assets, intangibles, and property tax accounting as needed
  • Support compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Interface with station leadership and internal departments during monthly closing processes
  • Collaborate with accounting team members on special projects and process improvements
  • Provide support for audits, reporting requests, and operational finance initiatives
  • Assist management with additional accounting and finance responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years of accounting experience, including journal entries and month-end close responsibilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field is required
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial reporting
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills required
  • Experience with accounting software and financial systems required
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

      Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Great Plains accounting software
  • Knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation
  • Experience with fixed assets, deferred revenue, intangibles, and property taxes highly desirable
  • CPA or CPA candidate a plus
  • Media, broadcast, or multi-entity accounting experience a plus
