Billing Specialist – Payment Application Specialist

Location: San Diego, CA (Onsite)
Shift: Day, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
 

Overview

Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego is seeking a Payment Application Specialist to join our Patient Financial Services – HomeCare team. This role focuses on insurance payment posting and reconciliation—not patient collections. You will handle payments from commercial payors, research variances, process denials, and ensure accurate posting in the Brightree system or similar platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, audit, reconcile, and apply cash receipts to AR accounts.

  • Interpret EOBs and apply payments, recoupments, and provider-level adjustments (PLBs).

  • Process non-sufficient funds (NSF) payments and identify misapplied funds.

  • Prepare and process denial and remittance codes correctly.

  • Perform in-depth research to resolve balancing issues or unidentified payments.

  • Escalate issues with ERAs, contractual calculations, or payer compliance.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in payment application; train team members and participate in process improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and reports.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of payment posting experience (HomeCare or hospital preferred; 5 years preferred).

  • Experience with commercial insurance payors; familiarity with Brightree strongly preferred.

  • High School Diploma required; Associates or higher preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to float across hospital units if needed, including NICU and satellite locations.

  • Must reside within 50 miles of San Diego, CA.
