Job description

The Medical Technologist Supervisor provides leadership and expertise in the following areas where applicable to the positions: Clinical testing and/or Phlebotomy (where applicable), and other lab support functions. Monitors all aspects of operations including daily monitoring of team member schedules, job performance and productivity; oversight of quality and safety standards; and compliance with regulatory requirements. Sets the standard and serves as a positive role model by following workflow guidelines and SOPs.

Essential Job Statements

Workflow and Staff Management: Maintains appropriate staffing to meet the needs of the section operations. Manage staffing schedules, oversee daily operations, and address operational bottlenecks.

Quality Control and Quality Assurance: oversees quality control/assurance; ensures compliance with quality control standards and safety guidelines. Prepare analytical reports to effectively communicate the section operational performance. Write and update procedures.

Technical Oversite and Inventory Management: monitors and evaluates equipment, systems and supplies to ensure operational efficiency, reliability of results and adequate inventory.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance: serves as the primary point of contact for resolving complex procedural problems and equipment malfunctions. Serves as a resource to troubleshoot and resolve assay issues. Investigate procedural errors, analyze adverse trends, and document effective corrective actions.

Regulatory Compliance & Operations: Ensure all procedures and staff actions comply with federal, state, and accrediting agency regulations (e.g., CLIA, CAP, FDA and The Joint Commission). Participates and prepares for CAP/FDA inspections.

Testing (as applicable): independently perform laboratory testing as needed.

Training and Teaching: conducts education and training for new personnel, fellows, residents, students and visitors.

Miscellaneous responsibilities: performs other duties as assigned and participates in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department of Pathology. Promotes teamwork and effective communication across departments and willingly accepts alternate assignments as needed.

Patient Population: Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program OR a Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science* in addition to graduation from an NAACLS-accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR Bachelor's Degree in a Life Science/Biological Science or Chemical Science with 8 or more years of on the job training in a hospital health care environment in a specific lab discipline performing high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (categorical or generalist certification required).

Preferred Education: Master's Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program

Licensing/ Certification

Licensure/Certification Required: Current Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) National Certifying Agency or equivalent ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification.

Individuals with required Credential Maintenance: technical positions that require certification maintenance, team members must obtain the number CE hours as required by The Board of Certification Credential Maintenance Program (CMP)

Individuals with ASCP certification prior to January 1, 2004, are not required to participate in the certification maintenance program.

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Scientist/Clinical Lab Scientist with at least three (3) years of Senior orLead level experience with increased responsibilities and expanded job duties.

Depending on the laboratory assignment, work experience requirement may be specific to a particular specialty areas such as Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology, Hematology, etc.
