How much do bridge welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for bridge welding in the United States is $41.61, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $34.38 and $47.36 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paid type of welder?

In welding, pipe welders and underwater welders tend to be among the highest paid due to the specialized skills and challenging environments involved. Bridge welders, especially those working on large infrastructure projects, can also earn high wages, particularly with certifications and experience in structural steel and heavy-duty welding. Salary varies based on location, certifications, and the complexity of the work performed.

What are some common challenges faced by bridge welders during large infrastructure projects?

Bridge welders often work in demanding environments that require both technical expertise and strong safety awareness. A frequent challenge is welding in awkward or elevated positions, sometimes outdoors and exposed to weather conditions. Coordinating with other construction professionals, such as engineers and inspectors, is essential to ensure welds meet structural and safety standards. Additionally, bridge welders must pay close attention to detail, as the quality of their work directly impacts the integrity and longevity of the bridge. Adapting to tight project timelines and strict quality inspections is also a significant part of the role.

Do welders work on bridges?

Bridge welders, a specialized type of welder, work on constructing and repairing bridges by joining metal components using techniques like arc welding. They often work outdoors in challenging environments and may need certifications such as AWS welding certifications to ensure safety and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bridge Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bridge Welder, you need proficiency in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and a solid understanding of structural steel, often backed by a high school diploma and welding certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society). Familiarity with welding equipment, safety gear, and inspection systems is crucial for quality and compliance. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills help ensure both safety and precision on demanding construction sites. These skills are essential to guarantee the structural integrity and safety of bridges while meeting project deadlines and standards.

Why do welders drink milk after welding?

Bridge welders often drink milk after welding because it helps soothe the stomach and neutralize acids caused by inhaling welding fumes and exposure to metal fumes. Milk contains proteins that can bind to certain toxins, providing some relief from irritation and helping to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort after a shift. However, it is not a medical treatment and should not replace proper safety measures and ventilation during welding.

What is bridge welding?

Bridge welding is a specialized type of welding performed during the construction, repair, and maintenance of bridges. It involves joining metal components—such as steel beams and girders—to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the bridge. Bridge welders must follow strict safety and quality standards, often working in challenging environments and at significant heights. This work is critical to infrastructure projects and requires skilled professionals with thorough training in welding techniques specific to bridge construction.

What is the difference between Bridge Welding vs Structural Welding?

AspectBridge WeldingStructural Welding
CertificationsAWS D1.5, AWS D1.1AWS D1.1, AWS D1.2
Work EnvironmentOutdoor, construction sites, bridgesIndoor/outdoor, buildings, infrastructure
Industry UsageTransportation, civil engineeringConstruction, commercial buildings
Job FocusLarge-scale bridge structuresBuildings, frameworks

Bridge Welding specifically involves constructing and repairing bridges, requiring specialized skills and certifications for large, outdoor structures. Structural Welding covers a broader range of steel frameworks in buildings and infrastructure. While both roles require similar certifications and safety standards, Bridge Welding focuses on outdoor, large-scale projects, whereas Structural Welding is more versatile across various construction types.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Bridge welding jobs can pay $50 an hour or more, especially for experienced welders with certifications such as AWS or ASME and skills in structural or pipeline welding. Pay rates vary based on location, project complexity, and union or contractor status, with specialized or overtime work often commanding higher wages.
