Job description

Position Summary You must be a current employee of Big Bend Community College in order to apply for this position as this is an Internal Position Opening only. This is a full-time, grant funded, 12-month position on the Big Bend Community College Campus. The Upward Bound Program is a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S

Department of Education to help first-generation and low-income students develop the necessary skills to enroll and succeed in college. TRIO Upward Bound has been hosted at Big Bend Community College since 1967 and is the longest-running program of its kind in WA State. The program is funded to serve 115 high school students per year at Moses Lake High School, Othello High School, Royal High School, and Warden High School.

The 5-year grant funding cycle began on June 1, 2022, and ends on May 31, 2027. Employment beyond this term is contingent upon available grant funding. The current annual grant award is $581,576.

Under the supervision of the TRIO Upward Bound Director, the Academic Coordinator will provide academic and personal advising to participants at two target high schools to ensure successful completion of high school and subsequent enrollment in a post-secondary program. The coordinator will plan and organize monthly Saturday PREP events and is responsible for the planning and supervision of the Bridge component during summer academy and the Student Ambassador component during the academic year. Essential Job Duties ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: Primary essential duties and responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following: Travel to (2) target high schools on a weekly basis during the academic year.

Inform target schools, community, and potential stakeholders of program services. Communicate and maintain positive rapport with participants, parents, target high school principals, counselors, college admission personnel and other stakeholders. Develop a plan to identify, recruit, and retain eligible students within target schools.

Assess participants' strengths and possible barriers to attending college and develop strategies to assist accordingly. Provide academic and personal advising to high school and dual enrolled participants. Provide career and college advising assisting students in discovering their interests, aptitudes and assist with educational planning.

Prepare and assist participants for college entrance exams, college admissions, and financial aid and scholarship applications. Monitor participants grades, attendance, and discipline records. Plan, coordinate, and lead monthly Saturday educational, social, and cultural events and/or workshops that promote college access, preparation, and life skills.

Disburse monthly student stipends and track student eligibility. Assist in the planning, delivery, and supervision of academic year and summer academy services. Assist in the recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of summer academy staff.

Assist in the supervision of residential summer academy staff. Coordinate and supervise the Bridge component of summer academy. Supervise and manage the evening study hall component during summer academy.

Responsible for accurate and timely documentation of student records in hard copy files and in a database. Assist in the supervision of student activities and events, including field trips. Assist in the evaluation of program services and the preparation of federal grant reports.

Assist the TRiO team in innovating new approaches to services and processes. Ensure compliance with the Department of Education regulations and program objectives. Assist with data collection and completion of the Annual Performance Report and federal grant application.

Ensure confidentiality of student information following the Federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), financial aid guidelines, and college regulations. Assist in maintaining program webpage and social media accounts. Maintain positive leadership and ethical/professional conduct.

Participate in team meetings, training, and conferences. Other duties as assigned. Minimum & Desirable Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.

At least two years of experience working with low-income and/or academically disadvantaged youth. Knowledge or secondary and postsecondary education. Strong technical skills with evidenced proficiency in modern office technology such as Microsoft Office Suite; Google Workspace, Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom.

Strong skills in communication-public speaking & interpersonal skills and writing. Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Must be self-directed and a self-starter with the ability to work independently.

Ability to work a minimum of one (1) Saturday per month and some evenings during the academic year and irregular days/hours during the six-week residential summer academy. Must have a valid Washington State driver's license and proof of car insurance. Desirable Qualifications: Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in education, counseling, social work or a related field.

Experience working in TRIO Programs and/or a background similar to the target population. Experience working with high school and/or college students and their parents/families. Experience in advising, teaching, and/or recruitment.

Bilingual proficiency in English/Spanish- reading, writing, and speaking. Applicants of similar backgrounds as program participants. Application Instructions This position is open until filled.
