N&W is looking for a dynamic Bridge Designer/Engineer with bridge inspection experience to team with us in the planning and inspecting of state and locally owned bridges and to assist in the preparation of reports.
Position SummaryThis position supports the Transportation Department (TD) and related work required by other Departments of the Company. Work duties will include, but are not limited to, structural design and analysis associated with highway structures including bridges, box culverts, retaining walls, sign and traffic signal structures. Duties also include creating plan details using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This position will also be involved with writing highway structure related reports, developing quantities, developing cost estimates and specifications. Duties will also include bridge condition inspections and writing condition inspection reports. Other possible duties may include site visits and development of proposals and/or statements of interest as needed.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Participate in bridge inspections, develop inspection reports, and perform structural load rating calculations.
- Perform inspections from ground level, ladder access, or hydraulic lift equipment.
- Apply structural engineering and detailing techniques in the development of bridge designs.
- Work on projects that typically include bridge (steel, prestress concrete and timber), box culverts, retaining walls and interchange design for highway projects.
- Perform structural calculations and assist with geometric layout and quantity development.
- Select standard bridge engineering/design procedures and develop structural details using specialized software.
Position RequirementsMinimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree from accredited Civil Engineering program
- 4 to 10 years' experience
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate
- MS Office, MathCAD, MicroStation and AutoCAD
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications - Professional Engineer (PE) license in PA
- NHI 130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges Training.
- PennDOT Bridge Safety Inspector Certification.
- Master's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Experience in structural design, load rating, and/or inspection.
- Experience with PennDOT and/or PTC design standards.
- Familiar with BMS2 and BMS3 as well as PennDOT Inspection Publications 100A and 238.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu and knowledge of engineering software packages such as: LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB-MultiPier, VBent, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, CSiBridge, RM Bridge, spColumn, STLBridgeLRFD, or STLBridge.
- Bentley OpenBridge Modeler and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d
Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentPhysical ability to perform field inspections of in-service bridge and culvert structures, tunnel structures, highway structures, overhead sign structures, and hydraulic structures, including positioning and climbing extension ladders, maneuvering small boats, driving long distances, air travel, occasionally working at night, and walking long distances on uneven surfaces.
Candidate should be comfortable with exposure to various field conditions and elements that may be encountered, such as but not limited to, hot and cold temperatures, water, work-at-height, confined spaces, plant, animals, and insects.
