What is a bookkeeping consultant?

Bookkeeping consultants are financial professionals who help businesses organize, manage, and analyze their financial records. They provide expertise in setting up bookkeeping systems, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. Bookkeeping consultants may also offer advice on accounting software, process improvements, and financial reporting to help businesses make informed decisions. Their services are valuable for companies that need specialized guidance or temporary assistance with their bookkeeping needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bookkeeping consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bookkeeping Consultant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and experience with financial record-keeping, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, and relevant certifications like Certified Bookkeeper (CB) or QuickBooks ProAdvisor, are highly valued. Strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly set top consultants apart. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate financial insights, maintaining compliance, and providing valuable guidance to clients or businesses.

How does a bookkeeping consultant typically collaborate with clients and their accounting teams?

A Bookkeeping Consultant frequently works closely with clients to understand their unique financial processes and reporting needs. They often liaise with in-house accounting teams to ensure accurate data entry, timely reconciliations, and compliance with financial regulations. Effective consultants provide training or guidance to staff, implement efficient bookkeeping systems, and may help streamline workflows between different departments. Regular communication and updates are essential to maintaining transparency and supporting the client's broader financial goals.

The main difference is that a Bookkeeping Consultant provides expert advice and strategic support across multiple clients, while a Bookkeeper handles day-to-day transaction recording for a specific organization. Both roles require similar certifications but differ in scope and work environment.

How much do bookkeeping consultants make?

Bookkeeping consultants typically earn between $20 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the work. Salaries can range from around $40,000 to $80,000 annually for full-time roles, with freelance consultants often setting their own rates. Certification in accounting software and bookkeeping skills can influence earning potential.

Job description

About Us: Acclarity is a premier accounting and advisory services firm providing a broad range of innovative financial and advisory solutions to businesses of all sizes. We help clients optimize financial operations, mitigate risk, and drive long-term value creation. As we continue to grow, we are building our network of experienced bookkeeping professionals who can support the day-to-day financial operations of our clients as needs arise.

Position Overview: The Bookkeeping Consultant is responsible for planning, executing, and maintaining core bookkeeping functions for our clients, ensuring accuracy and reliability in their financial records. This is a part-time, hourly W-2 consulting role offering flexible, project-based work for exceptional accounting professionals who value a collaborative environment, quality assignments, and work-life balance. Hours will vary based on client demand and engagement needs.

This role is ideal for professionals who bring a high degree of technical competency along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. A successful candidate will have proven experience, confidence, and decisiveness — problem solvers, self-starters, and highly organized individuals will flourish in this position. We look for professionals who are confident, passionate, adaptable, solutions-oriented, and self-motivated.

The role will be based in Columbus, OH. Onsite work and travel to client locations may be required based on engagement needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Bookkeeping & Client Delivery

  • Plan, execute, and maintain all bookkeeping functions for clients, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations.
  • Implement bookkeeping best practices and maintain a high level of accuracy in recording transactions, processing information, and reconciling accounts.
  • Identify and implement business process improvements for clients.
  • Develop thorough documentation and deliverables.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent job experience.
  • Seven-plus years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting.
  • In-depth understanding of core bookkeeping functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with accounting software, such as QuickBooks.
  • Comfort asking questions to get answers, and the capacity to adapt to new and changing technology and software.
  • Ability to make progress on ill-defined or unclear projects, take direction, and apply it across different situations.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a passion and commitment to providing quality client service.

What We Offer

  • Flexible, project-based, part-time hourly scheduling during normal business hours, with hours varying based on client demand.
  • Part-time W-2 employment, with the potential for hours to increase based on client and business needs.
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Access to benefits, including 401(k) with matching, health insurance, paid time off, and professional development assistance, based on eligibility and plan terms.
  • A collaborative, supportive team environment that respects work-life balance.

If you are an experienced bookkeeping professional interested in future project-based opportunities with Acclarity, we would welcome the opportunity to connect and learn more about your background.  Join our team and make a direct impact on our clients’ success and our firm’s growth.
