What is a Boat Relocation job?

A Boat Relocation job involves transporting a boat from one location to another, either by water or land. Professionals in this role move vessels for owners, buyers, or businesses, ensuring safe and timely delivery. Depending on the distance and boat type, the relocation may require sailing, towing, or hauling on a trailer.

How to get a job on the boats that travel the Great Lakes?

To work as a crew member on Great Lakes vessels, you typically need relevant maritime certifications such as a Merchant Mariner Credential and experience in navigation, safety, or deck operations. Applying through shipping companies, maritime job boards, or industry networks and demonstrating safety training and seamanship skills are essential steps.

How can I make money with a boat?

Boat relocation professionals can earn money by transporting boats for clients, often requiring skills in navigation, handling, and knowledge of maritime safety. This work may involve flexible schedules and certifications such as a captain's license, depending on the boat size and type.

Can I work on a cargo ship with no experience?

Boat relocation jobs on cargo ships typically require some maritime training or certifications, such as STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping). While entry-level positions may be available, having no experience can limit opportunities, and employers often prefer candidates with basic knowledge of safety procedures and ship operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in boat relocation roles?

Boat relocation specialists often contend with variable weather conditions, unfamiliar waterways, and the logistical complexities of moving vessels over long distances. Adapting to last-minute schedule changes and managing unexpected mechanical issues requires both flexibility and a calm, solution-oriented mindset. Teamwork is important, as you may coordinate with marina staff, owners, or transportation partners to ensure smooth handoffs. These challenges help make each job unique and require a proactive approach to safety and communication.

What boat job pays the most?

The highest-paying boat-related job is often a marine captain or vessel master, with salaries reaching six figures annually, especially for large commercial or luxury yachts. These roles require extensive experience, certifications, and strong leadership skills, and they often involve long hours and responsibility for crew and cargo safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Boat Relocation position, and why are they important?

Success in Boat Relocation requires strong navigational skills, a valid boating license or captain’s certification, and knowledge of maritime safety protocols. Proficiency with GPS navigation systems, marine radios, and an understanding of weather forecasting tools are typically necessary. Reliability, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals handle unexpected challenges and coordinate with clients or marina staff. These skills are critical to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant transport of vessels across various waterways.

Relocation

Montana has become the spot to be. Kevin Costner and his Yellowstone and 1883 have single-handedly helped Montana become discovered. If you want to move here, please know that we have stoplights, hitching posts still exist in some small towns, and the church is still the busiest place to go on Sundays. It's a safe place to live and a great place to raise a family looking for adventure. The cost of living is far lower than in other parts of the country. If you've ever dreamed of moving to the northwest, now may be the time to turn a dream into reality!

About Our Dealership
Gull Boats & RV in Missoula, MT, was started in 1941 by Bob Anderson Sr., but back then, it was called Gull Boats. Bob Sr. began by manufacturing boats, out of an incredible new-fangled material called fiberglass, in his parent's garage, where the Depot Deck is currently located. In those days, it was unheard of to be a landlocked boat manufacturer. Despite this (or because of it), his boats became a huge success. Soon, Gull's dealer network spread to Florida. Word of the quality of his boats was spreading. In the mid-'70s, three of Bob Anderson's sons, Bob Jr., Denny, and Mike, took over after working there during their youth. As the business grew, the boys moved down the road into a new larger location and continued to expand the business. RVs were added 20 years ago, and things have been rocking & rolling ever since. We are proud to be Missoula's "original" boat dealer and look forward to serving the great-grandchildren of some of our Dad's first customers. Thanks for 70+ years in Western Montana! At Gull, we always seek driven people to join our team. If you are interested in any positions listed, please complete our online application.
