Overview

MasTec Civil, a MasTec Company, is seeking a qualified and safety-focused Boat Captain to transport employees, contractors, equipment, and materials to and from marine construction jobsites in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Boat Captain is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and navigation of company vessels while ensuring compliance with all Coast Guard regulations and company safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Safely operate company vessels to transport personnel, tools, equipment, and materials between shore and jobsites.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vessel inspections and document findings.
  • Maintain vessel cleanliness, fuel levels, and overall operational readiness.
  • Monitor weather, tides, and water conditions to ensure safe transportation operations.
  • Ensure all passengers follow safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Coordinate transportation schedules with project managers, superintendents, and field crews.
  • Maintain accurate navigation logs, trip records, and maintenance reports.
  • Perform routine vessel maintenance and report repair needs promptly.
  • Assist with loading and unloading materials, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and implement emergency response procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations, company policies, and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Support field operations as necessary when transportation duties are complete.

Qualifications
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License with appropriate endorsement for vessel operation.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required site access credentials.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating commercial or work vessels.
  • Knowledge of marine navigation, vessel operation, and maritime safety regulations.
  • Ability to read nautical charts and operate GPS, radar, and marine communication equipment.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including overtime, weekends, and holidays as project needs require.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and safe vessel operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Experience supporting marine construction, heavy civil construction, dredging, bridge, dam, or waterfront projects.
  • Experience transporting construction crews, heavy equipment, and construction materials in coastal, river, lake, or inland waterway environments.
  • Knowledge of marine construction means and methods.
  • Experience operating crew boats, landing craft, work boats, barges, or similar commercial vessels.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, DOT, or industrial project sites.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience performing routine vessel maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety certification.
  • Experience working in fast-paced construction environments with multiple projects and deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely board and disembark vessels and access marine construction sites.
  • Ability to work around heavy equipment and active construction operations.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol screenings, background checks, and fit-for-duty evaluations.
