What is a BMS Technical Engineer?

BMS Technical Engineers are professionals who specialize in the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Building Management Systems (BMS). These systems control and monitor a building's mechanical and electrical equipment such as ventilation, lighting, power systems, fire systems, and security systems. BMS Technical Engineers ensure that these systems run efficiently, help optimize energy usage, and maintain a comfortable and safe environment for occupants. They often work with building owners, contractors, and other engineers to implement and support advanced building automation solutions.

How does a BMS Technical Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a building management system project?

As a BMS Technical Engineer, collaboration with other departments is crucial throughout the project lifecycle. You will often work closely with electrical engineers, HVAC specialists, and IT professionals to ensure integration and smooth operation of the building management system. Regular coordination with project managers and facility managers is also important to align system functionality with client requirements and project timelines. Effective communication and teamwork are key to addressing technical challenges and delivering a successful BMS implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BMS Technical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BMS Technical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of building automation systems, HVAC controls, and electrical engineering principles, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with BMS platforms like Siemens, Schneider, or Honeywell, as well as certifications such as KNX or Tridium, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients and team members are vital soft skills in this role. These capabilities ensure reliable system performance, efficient troubleshooting, and successful project delivery in complex building environments.

What is the difference between Bms Technical Engineer vs Bms Technician?

AspectBms Technical EngineerBms Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical, mechanical, or control engineering; certifications like BMS certification or HVAC licenses are common.Usually holds a diploma or technical certification in HVAC or electrical systems; less emphasis on formal engineering degrees.
Work EnvironmentDesign, installation supervision, troubleshooting, and system optimization in commercial or industrial settings.Installation, maintenance, and repair of BMS systems on-site, often in buildings or facilities.
Employer & Industry UsageEmployed by engineering firms, building management companies, or contractors; involved in system design and project management.Employed by facilities management or service companies; focused on operational maintenance and repairs.

While both roles work with BMS systems, the Bms Technical Engineer typically handles design, system integration, and troubleshooting at a higher technical level, often requiring an engineering background. The Bms Technician focuses on installation, maintenance, and repair tasks, working directly on-site to ensure system functionality.

Technical Project Manager (TPM), BMS Hardware Test

Job Number: 367606

Category: Test Engineering

Description: Job Title: Technical Project Manager (TPM), BMS Hardware Test

Pay Rate: Up to $75.18 /hr. (DOE)

Location: Berkeley, CA

Zip Code: 94702

A Technical Project Manager (TPM), BMS Hardware Test job opportunity is available with our client in Berkeley, Ca. In this role, you will sit at the intersection of Hardware Design, Test Engineering, Regulatory Compliance, and Operations. You will be directly responsible for the coordination, scheduling, and execution of critical UL 991 compliance testing for our Battery Management System (BMS).

Job Duties
  • Own the master schedule, milestones, and critical path for all BMS hardware testing tied to UL 991 (Standard for Tests for Safety-Related Controls Employing Solid-State Devices).
  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts between BMS hardware designers, embedded software engineers, test engineers, and external third-party certification bodies (e.g., UL, Intertek).
  • Ensure test readiness, unblock daily laboratory execution hurdles, and track the progress of test cycles against tight product launch timelines.
  • Coordinate and schedule the design, delivery, assembly, and commissioning of the specialized test beds, instrumentation, and environmental chambers required for UL 991 testing.
  • Manage timelines with external fabricators, equipment vendors, and internal technicians to ensure hardware delivery matches the test schedule.
  • Coordinate the design and build of infrastructure supporting wider BMS Reliability testing, maximumly leveraging the core hardware and software designs developed for the UL 991 effort.
  • Establish rigorous tracking for test failures or anomalies, ensuring clean data and clear root-cause analysis (RCA) are effectively routed back to the product design teams for iterative improvements.
  • Provide clear, data-driven progress updates, risk assessments, and mitigation plans to leadership regarding certification timelines and lab capacity constraints.
Knowledge/Skills/Education
  • 5+ years of experience as a TPM, Project Manager, or Lead Test Engineer working with complex electronic systems, ideally in automotive, aerospace, medical device, or grid-scale energy storage industries.
  • Strong foundational understanding of PCBA manufacturing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, and Battery Management System (BMS) architectures.
  • Prior experience navigating safety-critical hardware standards (e.g., UL 991, UL 1998, IEC 61508, or ISO 26262).
  • Proven track record of managing the build-out of physical engineering assets, test fixtures, or laboratory capabilities.
  • Mastery of scheduling tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, MS Project) with an ability to distill highly fluid technical challenges into clear, linear dependencies.
