Job description

Job Title: Senior Director, Board Relations
Department: Office of the CEO
Location: Boston, MA (Hybrid work model possible, but regular onsite presence is required)

BMC Health System is seeking a strategic, curious, organized and highly relational Senior Director, Board Relations to lead and manage various facets of Trustee engagement, governance support, and Board cultivation. This new role will serve as a key liaison between members of the health system's various Boards of Trustees and the leadership team of the organization. They will be responsible for overseeing the trustee recruitment process, developing strong relationships with and a deep understanding of existing trustees, and helping to manage the overall experience of Trustees as it relates to agenda and meeting planning, content development and delivery, and progression through the governance structure. The successful candidate is a quick learner with high EQ, excellent relationship-building and relationship management skills, and sophisticated experience with executive-level communications. This will be a highly collaborative role, requiring that the Senior Director directly interface with and support Board members and partner closely with internal partners from across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Trustee Recruitment & Pipeline Development

  • Lead the overall design, planning and execution of a multi-year Trustee recruitment process, in close partnership with members of the executive leadership team and Board and Committee leadership.
  • Build, manage, and track a robust pipeline of potential Board candidates (with input and in close collaboration with key internal stakeholders), including by understanding and drawing on existing BMCHS networks and other external sources.
  • Research and identify potential new Trustees who are aligned with BMC Health System's strategic direction, mission, and values.
  • Serve in many cases as the first point of contact for prospective Trustees, articulating the organization's strategic vision and assessing mutual interest and fit.
  • Develop tailored engagement cases for potential Board candidates and oversee the sequencing of outreach to optimize executive and Board member time.
  • Partner closely with the Office of Development to ensure coordination on Trustee identification and outreach.

Board Engagement & Experience

  • Act as a key internal and external point of contact on Board-related matters.
  • Proactively manage, coordinate, help develop/draft, and track Board communications and relationship-building efforts.
  • Serve as a trusted resource and strategic advisor to Board members to ensure an engaged, informed, and cohesive Board culture.
  • Help coordinate the many touchpoints between the BMC Health System and the Trustees to ensure a positive experience as Trustees engage with the organization. Proactively consider the interests and manage the progression of each Trustee.
  • Think strategically about what agenda items, topics and decisions should be brought to which parts of the governance structure, including the sequencing of engagement. Review and coordinate the development of materials to ensure that they cover the right information at the right level of detail to match the audience.

Governance & Onboarding

  • Support the regular board evaluation and periodic governance refresh process, working closely with executive leadership and Board committees.
  • Design and implement comprehensive onboarding plans for new Trustees.
  • Develop, maintain, and update Trustee orientation materials and governance resources.

Project Work

  • Other duties as assigned

Key Internal Relationships:

  • Strong and regular communication and coordination with the Office of Development and Office of the General Counsel

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Public Administration, Health Administration, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience; experience in management consulting, executive communications, nonprofit/healthcare administration, philanthropic development / stewardship, client management, and/or Board relations.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with executive-level stakeholders, Board members, or Trustees.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Strong project management and tracking systems experience; detail-oriented and process-driven.

Compensation Range:

$175,500.00- $254,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness. In addition, BMCHS offers generous total compensation that includes, but is not limited to, benefits (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy), discretionary annual bonuses and merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family well-being.
