POSITION PURPOSE

The Cleaning Specialists are responsible for sustaining a sterile environment in all areas of the hospital. Cleans and sanitizes horizontal and vertical surfaces as directed. Performs all duties in a manner consistent with the mission and values of MVMC.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Monitors building to ensure a neat and clean presentation and safe environment.
2. Performs various routine cleaning and maintenance activities to include sweeping and mopping of all solid surface flooring and vacuuming of carpeted areas.
3. Cleans restrooms to include disinfecting toilets, sinks, tub-showers, and floors.
4. Damp dust all horizontal surfaces, as well as damp dust and wash windows and window coverings.
5. Transports trash, linens and biohazardous waste to appropriate areas using appropriate containers.
6. Ensures all cleaning supplies for the entire facility are ordered and maintained at appropriate levels, safely stored, and labeled.
7. Stocks and restocks closets, carts, supply room, patient, and non-patient areas.
8. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality.
9. Utilizes appropriate chemicals and supplies according to procedure.
10. Maintains and empties sharps containers throughout the building.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Education, License/Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities

• High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Previous housekeeping experience, preferably in a health care setting preferred.
• CPR certification required. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The demands and conditions described here are representative of those the employee must meet to perform the essential functions of the job (see special accommodation statement).

Extensive standing and walking with occasional reaching stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull at least 45 pounds frequently. Must be able to stand and walk for periods of up to 6 hours frequently.

Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl frequently during a six-hour shift. Very good close vision and the ability to identify and distinguish color. Some risk of radiation exposure. Some risk of electrical shock. Work is in a clean hospital environment. The noise level is quiet to moderate. 

Supervision Exercised: This position does not supervise other staff.

OSHA CATEGORY CLASSIFICATION

Category classifications have been developed to assist employees in determining their risk for occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. These categories are:

Category I Employee will have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.

Category II Employee may have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.

Category III Employee will not have exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine job.
