Job Description
Undergoes a 20 week/868-hour curriculum of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy activities including classroom instruction, assignments, physical training, and non-sworn law enforcement activities in some or all of a variety of areas including traffic enforcement, narcotics investigation, crime scene processing, community affairs, law, investigations, crime prevention, and other specialties. The successful trainee will acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a sworn entry-level law enforcement position (e.g. Police Cadet) within the state, county, or municipal governments and/or certain private agencies. Candidates must meet all of the essential job functions and qualifications of the Police Officer position in order to be considered for the Police Cadet position.
The North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission mandates the topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic and alcohol beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.
Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test) course, and the state certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate. Upon successful completion of BLET, students can earn up to 23 credit hours toward an A.A.S. degree in Criminal Justice Technology.
Upon successful completion of the BLET certification course, individuals are eligible for promotion to a role as a sworn police officer for the Town of Huntersville, contingent on additional field training. Failure to graduate from BLET within the prescribed training period may be cause for termination.

Essential Duties of the Position
The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
  • Attends and successfully completes the BLET certification course at an accredited and Town of Huntersville Department-approved educational institution in the timeframe required.
  • Effectively and professionally communicates, verbally and in writing, with BLET staff and Town of Huntersville Department supervisory staff.
  • Represents the Town of Huntersville Police Department in a professional manner to the BLET staff and others.
  • Assists with needs and tasks of the Town of Huntersville Police Department as time permits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Experience
Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; some knowledge of the geography of the Town and location of important buildings; ability to deal professionally, courteously and fairly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates and the general public.
Must be 21 years of age by completion of BLET. High school diploma or GED. Possession of or eligibility to obtain a valid North Carolina Law Enforcement Certificate (BLET).
Must have United States citizenship. Must have good moral character. Must not have committed or been convicted of a felony. Must have no more than 4 Class A misdemeanor convictions (within last 5 years). Must have no Class B misdemeanor convictions. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Note: Employment with criminal justice agencies is subject to specific agency criteria; therefore, completion of the course alone is no guarantee of eligibility of employment.
Supplemental Information
This position's physical requirements involve very heavy work which requires occasionally exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking.
Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), and bloodborne pathogens, and may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
