How much do biomedical visualization jobs pay per hour?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in biomedical visualization, and why are they important?
To thrive in Biomedical Visualization, a strong background in both biomedical sciences and visual communication—often supported by a degree in medical illustration, biomedical visualization, or a related field—is essential. Mastery of digital illustration software (such as Adobe Creative Suite), 3D modeling tools (like Autodesk Maya or Blender), and sometimes certification from the Board of Certification of Medical Illustrators (CMI) is advantageous. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective collaboration and communication skills help differentiate top professionals in this field. These skills are crucial for accurately conveying complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including healthcare professionals, patients, and educators.
Are biomedical visualization jobs in high demand?
What is a biomedical visualization?
A Biomedical Visualization job involves creating accurate and engaging visuals to communicate complex medical and scientific concepts. Professionals in this field use illustration, animation, virtual reality, and other media to assist in education, research, and patient communication. They often collaborate with medical professionals, researchers, and educators to produce materials for textbooks, surgical simulations, pharmaceutical advertising, and more. This career requires expertise in both science and visual communication, often supported by specialized training in medical illustration or biomedical design.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of someone working in biomedical visualization?
Professionals in Biomedical Visualization typically spend their days creating detailed medical illustrations, 3D models, animations, or interactive media to support education, research, or patient communication. They collaborate closely with scientists, physicians, and educators to ensure that visuals are scientifically accurate and effectively tailored to the target audience. Depending on the project, tasks may also include editing storyboards, consulting on visual strategy, and staying current with new visualization technologies. This dynamic role combines creative design skills with scientific knowledge and often involves both independent and team-based work.

The Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah is growing and pursuing multiple new faculty hires over the next 3 years . These hires will expand the core research expertise at the SCI Institute, further enhance its strong research reputation in scientific, information, and biomedical visualization; image and data analysis; and interdisciplinary scientific computing. A major goal is to attract new partnerships across the University and beyond. Candidates whose research expertise integrates social and technical aspects are of particular interest.
This specific recruitment is for a senior-level tenure track faculty position within the SCI Institute as part of a new faculty Cluster in Computational Oncology (CCO). Advanced computing, data science, imaging, and visualization are central to solving fundamental problems in cancer research and care. CCO is a highly innovative collaboration between Huntsman Cancer Institute, the University of Utah's Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute at the University of Utah. Together we leverage our internationally renowned research strengths to make lifesaving advances in the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.
Initial hires as part of the CCO will consist of two senior positions, including 1) the Senior Director for Data Science at Huntsman Cancer Institute in the Department of Oncological Sciences (hired in 2022) and 2) this position, a Computational Oncology leader within the SCI Institute. The academic home will be within a department in the College of Engineering, Medicine, or Science. These two senior hires will be followed by multiple junior faculty positions.
For the Computational Oncology leader position, the SCI Institute is looking for an established researcher at the Associate or Full Professor level in an area that aligns with SCI's core research thrusts, i.e., scientific, information, and biomedical visualization, image and data analysis, and interdisciplinary scientific computing, with demonstrated leadership in applications to Oncology. Candidates whose research expertise integrates social and technical aspects are of particular interest. The successful candidate is expected to help coordinate joint initiatives, proposals, and faculty recruitment between the SCI Institute and HCI including the Computational Oncology Research Initiative (CORI) and other Cancer Informatics initiatives. The faculty member is expected to become a Cancer Center member, and as appropriate, may be considered for an adjunct position in the Department of Oncological Sciences.
All candidates are invited to submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter containing a description of professional experience (including scientific accomplishments, leadership responsibilities and 3 references), a research plan (up to 3 pages), and teaching strategy (up to 1 page). Applicants should describe their vision for interdisciplinary, computational oncology research leadership within the context of the SCIInstitute's mission of multidisciplinary bridge building (http://www.sci.utah.edu/the-institute/bridges.html), especially collaborations with researchers within the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
For additional questions, please contact Chris Johnson (crj@sci.utah.edu) Search Committee Chair.
