How much do biomedical optics engineer jobs pay per year?
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Biomedical Optics Engineer?
Biomedical Optics Engineers typically spend their days designing and testing optical systems or devices used in medical diagnostics and therapy, analyzing experimental data, and documenting their findings. They collaborate closely with researchers, clinicians, and product development teams to refine prototypes and ensure medical devices meet regulatory and clinical requirements. Their work may also involve troubleshooting equipment, optimizing imaging techniques, and staying updated on the latest technological advancements in optics and biomedicine. This blend of hands-on technical work and interdisciplinary teamwork makes the daily routine both dynamic and intellectually rewarding.
What does a Biomedical Optics Engineer do?
A Biomedical Optics Engineer designs and develops optical systems for medical applications, such as diagnostic imaging, laser therapies, and biophotonic sensors. They work on technologies that use light to analyze or treat biological tissues, often collaborating with healthcare professionals and researchers. Their responsibilities may include modeling optical systems, testing prototypes, and optimizing devices for clinical use. This role requires expertise in optics, biomedical engineering, and signal processing to improve medical diagnostics and treatments.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Biomedical Optics Engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Biomedical Optics Engineer, a solid understanding of optics, photonics, and biomedical engineering, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s or advanced degree, is essential. Familiarity with specialized tools such as optical design software (e.g., Zemax, COMSOL), programming languages (like MATLAB or Python), and knowledge of laboratory and imaging equipment is important. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities enable engineers to design innovative optical systems for medical applications, solve complex technical challenges, and effectively communicate with multidisciplinary teams.

Job description
The successful candidate will be able to leverage deep expertise in physics, physiology and optics to develop the optical health sensors in the Apple Watch and AirPods. This candidate should also be adept at building research platforms to study physiology and analyze user data to infer real-world performance trends and emergent behavior. The candidate must be able to employ simulation tools to develop models of sensor behavior. Lastly, a successful candidate will be able to distill complex technical concepts into concise technology assessments to cross-functional collaborators and senior management.
Description
You will be working with a team of research scientists and hardware engineers developing technologies for the optical health sensors. You will be responsible for developing research platforms to investigate novel sensing solutions, leveraging modeling tools to exhaling empirical observations and lastly defining sensing requirements to multidisciplinary sensor architects for integration into products. In this role you will also be designing user studies and analyzing data to empirically prove the application of a sensing solution. Lastly, you will be responsible for summarizing your findings and communicating your findings to the larger team and senior leadership in a clear and succinct manner.
Minimum Qualifications
In-depth understanding of light propagation in biological tissue.
Experience with hands-on development of optical systems for biomedical optics applications.
Strong optical simulation skills using commercial ray-tracing packages.
Collaborative and willing to work in cross-functional fast-paced technology development.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent documentation skills.
BS in Biomedical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with both coherent and non-coherent light-tissue interaction principles and their applications, e.g. spectroscopy.
Fundamental understanding of device physics governing typical light emitter and detectors.
Conversant in cross-functional aspects of system design; mechanical tolerance of system, sources of electrical noise.
MS/PhD in Biomedical, Optical Engineering or related field.
