How much do biomedical laboratory technology jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for biomedical laboratory technology in the United States is $28.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.28 and $32.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What can you do with a biomedical laboratory technology degree?

A biomedical laboratory technology degree prepares individuals to work as medical laboratory technologists or technicians, performing diagnostic tests on patient samples in clinical laboratories. Graduates can work in hospitals, research facilities, or diagnostic labs, using tools like microscopes and lab equipment, often requiring certification or licensing. The role involves analyzing data, maintaining lab safety, and supporting healthcare diagnosis and research.

What is the difference between Biomedical Laboratory Technology vs Medical Laboratory Science?

AspectBiomedical Laboratory TechnologyMedical Laboratory Science
CredentialsDiploma or associate degree, certification often requiredBachelor's degree, certification often required
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, research labsHospitals, diagnostic labs, research facilities
Job RolePerforming lab tests, assisting in researchAnalyzing samples, interpreting results, patient interaction

Biomedical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists both work in laboratory settings performing tests and analyzing samples. However, Medical Laboratory Science typically requires a bachelor's degree and involves more complex analysis and interpretation, often with greater responsibility in patient diagnosis. Biomedical Laboratory Technologists usually have a diploma or associate degree and focus on technical testing and sample preparation. Both roles are essential in healthcare and research environments, with overlapping skills but different educational requirements and job scopes.

What is a biomedical laboratory technologist?

Biomedical Laboratory Technologists are professionals who perform laboratory tests and analyses on blood, body fluids, and tissues to help diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. They operate complex laboratory equipment, ensure the accuracy of test results, and maintain strict safety and quality standards. Their work supports doctors and other healthcare providers in making informed decisions about patient care. These technologists may specialize in areas such as microbiology, hematology, or clinical chemistry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biomedical laboratory technologist?

To thrive as a Biomedical Laboratory Technologist, you need a solid background in biology, chemistry, and laboratory procedures, typically backed by a degree in biomedical science or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), diagnostic instruments, and certifications such as ASCP or equivalent are commonly required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accuracy in test results, compliance with safety standards, and collaboration with healthcare teams to support patient care.

What do biomedical laboratory technicians do?

Biomedical laboratory technicians perform tests on biological samples to help diagnose diseases and support medical research. They prepare specimens, operate laboratory equipment, and record data, often working under the supervision of scientists or medical professionals in clinical or research labs. Certification and knowledge of laboratory safety and procedures are typically required.

What are some common challenges faced by biomedical laboratory technologists in maintaining sample integrity and quality control?

Biomedical Laboratory Technologists often encounter challenges such as preventing sample contamination, ensuring accurate labeling, and adhering to strict protocols for specimen handling. Maintaining quality control requires precise calibration of equipment and thorough documentation to meet regulatory standards. Additionally, technologists must stay updated on new testing methods and adapt quickly to changes in laboratory technology, all while collaborating closely with clinicians to ensure reliable test results.
