Job Description

This role provides technical support within a biomedical laboratory environment, focusing on the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment. The position involves close collaboration with laboratory staff, adherence to strict quality and regulatory standards, and ongoing training with advanced vendors and sr biomedical technicians to ensure reliable operation of laboratory instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Competently perform all assigned departmental duties related to biomedical equipment support.
  • Work under close supervision and assist other Biomedical Technicians with departmental tasks and projects.
  • Work closely with laboratory staff to support daily operations and equipment needs.
  • Attend advanced vendor training to develop specialized expertise in laboratory and biomedical equipment.
  • Operate laboratory equipment using established protocols and within quality control limits.
  • Perform skilled work on preventive maintenance, repair, safety testing, and recording functional test data for laboratory instruments.
  • Evaluate equipment and operational reports in an accurate and timely manner, recognizing and resolving unusual problems.
  • Learn and apply troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and resolve issues with laboratory equipment.
  • Assure timely troubleshooting and resolution of equipment repair needs to minimize downtime.
  • Assist in routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, including calibration and functional checks.
  • Maintain strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies, and all regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain correspondence, reports, and records related to equipment maintenance, repairs, and testing.
  • Perform computer data entry to document maintenance activities, test results, and inventory information.
  • Assist in parts inventory management to ensure availability of components required for equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Support vendor management activities, including coordination with external service providers and equipment manufacturers.
  • Attend trainings to provide onsite service of equipment and expand technical capabilities.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external customers, delivering excellent customer service.
  • Become familiar with the equipment management system and use it to track maintenance, repairs, and equipment status.
  • Obtain and maintain a working knowledge of quality processes, basic troubleshooting techniques, laboratory systems, and regulatory requirements.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and contribute to a safe working environment in laboratory, warehouse, and office areas.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Biomedical Engineering Technician (BMET) or equivalent role.
  • 3+ years of experience within the biomedical equipment field, specifically working with laboratory equipment.
  • Proven experience performing preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and documenting results.
  • Hands-on experience with equipment troubleshooting and repair in a laboratory or biomedical setting.
  • Experience working with equipment vendors and coordinating service or support activities.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory instrumentation, including calibration and metrology concepts.
  • Ability to acquire and apply a working knowledge of quality systems, basic troubleshooting, and laboratory systems.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of regulatory and quality requirements and perform consistently within all SOPs and policies.
  • Capability to successfully troubleshoot basic equipment within the first year of employment.
  • Experience with parts inventory management for biomedical or laboratory equipment.
  • Excellent customer service skills for both internal and external customers.
  • Proficiency in computer data entry and maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in safety testing, functional data recording, and documentation.
  • Effective communication skills to maintain clear and professional interactions with internal teams and external vendors.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework related to biomedical engineering, technology, or a closely related field is required.
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • BS degree is preferred; AS degree will be considered for candidates with strong relevant experience.
  • Preferred experience with environmental monitoring and control equipment in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with equipment management systems used to track maintenance, repairs, and asset information.
  • Knowledge or experience with calibration and metrology practices applied to laboratory instrumentation.
  • Exposure to or experience with diagnostic and laboratory equipment from major manufacturers (for example, Roche Diagnostics, Werfen, and similar platforms).
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Associate in Biomedical Technology, or Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES) are highly desirable.
  • Ability to attend and benefit from advanced vendor training programs focused on biomedical and laboratory equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage documentation, reports, and parts inventory effectively.

Work Environment

The role is based in a mixed environment that includes laboratory, warehouse, and office settings. The position starts on a day shift for training, typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, for approximately 2–3 months. After training, the normal schedule transitions to 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with on-call responsibilities over the weekend on an every-other-weekend rotation. The technician works as part of a small team and collaborates closely with one other employee and sr Biomedical Technicians. External vendors and sr technicians provide structured training on how to maintain and repair laboratory equipment. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, regulatory, and quality requirements, with regular use of laboratory instrumentation, monitoring systems, and equipment management tools. Professional attire suitable for laboratory, warehouse, and office work is expected, and employees follow all safety protocols and protective measures appropriate to each area.

The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $83200.00/yr.
