Job description

Job Title: Design Engineer

Job Description

The Design Engineer will focus on customization projects, adapting existing products rather than creating entirely new designs from scratch. This role translates customer requirements into clear design inputs and develops 3D models that meet functional, manufacturing, and regulatory expectations, particularly for medical device applications. The engineer will collaborate closely with customers and internal teams to ensure projects are delivered accurately and on time.

Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret customer requirements to develop clear and complete design inputs.
  • Create detailed 3D models in SolidWorks based on customer specifications and project requirements.
  • Customize existing designs and components to meet specific customer needs rather than designing entirely new products.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure designs meet functional and manufacturing requirements.
  • Incorporate knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and materials such as stainless steel into design work.
  • Communicate regularly with customers to provide timelines, delivery dates, and progress updates throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including research and development leadership, to report on project status, timelines, and any issues or risks.
  • Submit 3D models and design documentation for review and approval, and incorporate feedback as needed.
  • Move promptly to the next customer request or project once designs receive approval.
  • Ensure all designs align with medical device standards and internal quality expectations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of design inputs, revisions, and final outputs for each project.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of SolidWorks experience, including creation and modification of detailed 3D models.
  • 3+ years of experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to mechanical designs.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering principles relevant to product design and customization.
  • Experience working with manufacturing processes and an understanding of how design decisions impact manufacturability.
  • Familiarity with medical device design requirements and considerations.
  • Experience designing with stainless steel and related mechanical components preferred.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into clear, structured design inputs.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in design, documentation, and timeline management.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering is preferred.
  • Equivalent work experience in place of a degree will be considered.
  • Experience working on customization projects where existing designs are adapted to meet specific needs.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and customer requests in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to incorporate feedback into design revisions.

Work Environment

This is a full-time onsite position, working approximately 40 hours per week. Typical core hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with flexibility to start earlier and finish at 3:30 p.m., or start later and work later in the day to complete an eight-hour shift. The role is primarily onsite rather than hybrid or remote; however, there is flexibility to work from home occasionally when a legitimate need arises. The work involves collaborating closely with internal teams and customers in an environment focused on mechanical design, SolidWorks modeling, and medical device customization using materials such as stainless steel.
