What is a BIM intern?

A BIM Intern assists in creating, managing, and analyzing building information models using software like Revit or Navisworks. They support design teams by producing 3D models, coordinating project data, and ensuring accuracy in digital construction documents. Interns may also help with clash detection, quantity takeoffs, and project visualization. This role provides hands-on experience in Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows and enhances collaboration across architecture, engineering, and construction disciplines.

What types of projects or tasks will I typically work on as a BIM intern?

As a BIM Intern, you will typically support project teams by developing and updating digital 3D models, assisting with clash detection, and helping prepare construction documentation. Your daily tasks may include coordinating with architects and engineers, attending project meetings, and integrating feedback into BIM models. You may also be asked to organize project files, generate construction schedules, or contribute to quality control checks. This role offers hands-on experience with real-world projects and provides exposure to the collaborative workflow common in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the BIM intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BIM Intern, you need a foundational knowledge of architecture, engineering, or construction concepts along with basic proficiency in Building Information Modeling. Familiarity with software like Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, or Navisworks, and sometimes entry-level certifications in BIM or CAD tools, are highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you integrate well within multidisciplinary project teams. These skills are essential for producing accurate digital models, collaborating on complex projects, and supporting efficient project delivery.

Job description

Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, and another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system.
Our In-House Design (IHD) directorate provides design and engineering services to meet operations' needs in a manner consistent with BEDC's core values of safety, schedule, quality, and customer service. IHD supports projects from the capital project initiation process through preliminary design, design, procurement construction, and finally with the turnover to operations. IHD's Design Services division includes Architectural, Site Civil, Structural, Process Mechanical/HVAC, Water Tunnel Mechanical Systems, and Electrical discipline sections. Each design section prepares design and construction documents including engineering plans and specifications for the construction of water supply, sewer, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. IHD projects are typically of the highest priority for the Agency. IHD's Engineering Services includes the Quality Assurance, Laboratory Services, Specifications/Standard Operating Procedures, Sustainability, and BIM/CADD sections. The Engineering Services division focuses on project's sustainability, resiliency, laboratory material testing, quality reviews and inspections, standardization of documents, project delivery standards and uses current BIM/CADD technology to streamline engineering design processes.
The Structural section continues the DEP's proud legacy of designing and managing the construction of New York City's entire water supply and wastewater infrastructure. Tapping into decades of internal experience, applying tried and true analysis methods, and utilizing modern design techniques (like finite element modeling, [FEM]), the Structural Section is tasked with creating structural bid documents including drawings and specifications supported by Structural Calculations. Projects include water tunnels and shafts, distribution chambers, pump stations, treatment plants, and other subsurface and surface structures. The Structural section also provides design services during construction (DSDC) and advises and assists other IHD sections with their structural engineering design needs. This section regularly coordinates with BEDC's other sections, DEP's operating bureaus, and DEP's outside engineering consultants as well.
BEDC seeks to hire two Civil Engineering Interns to support the Structural section, located in our Lefrak Office in Queens, NY. Under direct supervision of the Lead Design Engineer, the selected candidates will assist in the implementation of capital projects through the design and construction phase by preparing engineering documents including drawings, calculations, and specifications for large, complex projects for water supply and wastewater facilities. Tasks may include preparing said engineering documents for civil site development of water supply facilities, water tunnels, wastewater pumping stations, wastewater treatment systems, and other miscellaneous facilities. Specific work assignments may also include, but are not limited to, conducting investigations and field visits, reviewing shop drawings, and requests for information; preparing and completing change order documentation; assisting in project schedule development; communicating and coordinating with other engineers and stakeholders; and documenting issues/resolutions in issues logs.
**** Only those applicants with permanent Civil Service status as a Civil Engineering Intern or who have taken the DCAS Civil Service Exam for Civil Engineering Intern (Exam No. 6116) are eligible to apply to this JVN. If you do not have permanent civil service status as a Civil Engineering Intern or who have taken the DCAS Civil Service Exam for Civil Engineering Intern (Exam No. 6116), please do not apply to this position as you will not be considered for an interview. ****
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Familiarity with the planning, layout and details of contract drawings, specifications, shop drawing review, field inspections and investigations.
- Intermediate Computer software skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with the design of site plans, piping plans, grading and drainage plans, and stormwater management for facilities during and post construction.
- Familiarity with the application of code requirements, standards for design and construction, and preparation of technical reports, related design software applications, and excellent
communication skills and writing skills.
- Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge in drafting in AutoCAD and/or Revit,.
- Experience in shaft and tunnel structural design and/or building/facility design.
- Experience in Designing using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs such as, but not limited to, STAAD Pro (Bentley), RAM Elements (Bentley), or SAFE (CSI).
