What is a BESS project manager?

A BESS Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role involves coordinating with engineering, procurement, and construction teams to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards. BESS Project Managers also handle stakeholder communications and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle. Their expertise is crucial for integrating large-scale energy storage solutions into electric grids or renewable energy facilities.

How does a BESS project manager typically coordinate with cross-functional teams during the project lifecycle?

As a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project Manager, you will regularly collaborate with engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure seamless project execution. This includes leading meetings to align project objectives, resolving technical or logistical issues, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations and safety standards. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll often act as the main point of contact between internal teams, external vendors, and clients to keep the project on track and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BESS project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, electrical engineering, and renewable energy systems, typically supported by a relevant degree and PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project), energy storage technologies, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills are vital for coordinating multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget in the rapidly evolving energy sector.

Job description

Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer (EPC) — Design the Grid Behind the Energy Transition

McCarran, NV | Full-Time | $150,000 – $190,000

The Opportunity

How often do you get to design transmission-level infrastructure from a blank sheet? Our client — a rapidly scaling clean energy innovator building some of the largest industrial facilities in the country — needs a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design of substations and high voltage systems that will power the U.S. energy transition. You'll serve as Engineer of Record on 69kV–345kV projects and own your design packages from concept through commissioning.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Transmission-scale work: Industrial substations from 69kV to 345kV, plus grid integration for renewables and battery energy storage
  • Real authority: Engineer of Record with independent ownership of design packages
  • No state income tax: Nevada keeps more of that salary in your pocket
  • Mission that matters: Your infrastructure directly enables domestic clean energy production

What You'll Do

  • Lead design of high voltage AC systems — industrial substations (69kV–345kV) and their integration with transmission lines and MV distribution
  • Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans
  • Run grid simulation and stability studies (PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner) plus short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
  • Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs on interconnection, permitting, and compliance for renewable and BESS projects
  • Develop relay settings (SEL AcSELerator) and select HV equipment — switchgear, breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs/CTs, protection relays
  • Lead code compliance reviews (NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA)
  • Support construction and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Lead R&D on medium voltage DC distribution for BESS integration
  • Manage design packages end-to-end — scope, schedule, budget, cost estimates
  • Mentor junior engineers and build team standards and workflows

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
  • Active PE license (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC PE within 2 months of start
  • 10+ years in high voltage electrical design, EPC preferred
  • Advanced skills in PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD/EMTP, SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam
  • Bonus points: HVDC/converter station design, SCADA and substation automation, field construction/commissioning experience
  • A drive to build things that matter
