What is bench staffing?

Bench staffing refers to the practice in staffing agencies or consulting firms where employees, often skilled professionals, are hired and maintained on the 'bench'—meaning they are employed but not currently assigned to a client project. These employees receive training, work on internal projects, or wait for client assignments. The goal is to ensure that qualified staff are readily available to fill client needs quickly, improving response time and client satisfaction. Bench staffing helps companies manage workforce fluctuations and deliver projects efficiently. However, keeping a large bench can be costly if not managed properly.
